Ancient History and Spectacular Archaeological Sites

Bodrum is an important tourism center and well loved holiday destination, attracting many international tourists during the summer season. The tour will depart at 4:00 pm from Bodrum, the route will include pleasing swimming spots, spectacular scenery and many fascinating historical locations. Our next stop will be Bodrum Castle and Underwater Archeology Museum, which was established in Bodrum Castle in 1964. There are 14 exhibition halls to visit, most of which include underwater artifacts and shipwrecks. We will then visit the Halicarnassus Mausoleum. It is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and was the greatest achievement of Carian King Mausolus, who moved his capital from Mylasa to Halicarnassus. Tour members can explore the remains of pre-Mausoleum stairways and tombs, the narrow entry to Mausolus' tomb chamber, the original drainage systems, and the large fluted marble column drums. We will then visit Bodrum Antique Theater where we will witness a fantastic example of a classical Greek theater and walk in the footsteps of fierce ancient gladiators. This wonderful historical landmark has a capacity for 13,000 spectators and was mainly used for gladiator battles and theatrical plays. Carrying on with our historical sightseeing journey we will visit Myndos Gate. It is one of the most interesting historical sites to visit within the region. The ancient landmark played a crucial part in the defense of the city during an attack from Alexander the Great’s army.

Today we will spend the day exploring Iasos Ancient City, which attracts many history enthusiasts and international holiday makers. The captivating historic site is located in the village of Kiyikislacik in the province of Mugla, perched on a small peninsula on the shores of the Gulf of Gulluk. The beautiful setting provides a perfect combination of history, clear turquoise water and lush green vegetation. At this location well-preserved ruins that portray the architectural and artistic achievements of various ancient civilizations can be seen such as the central marketplace and gathering area, the city's council house, a semicircular auditorium, the ancient theater, an Acropolis and a Necropolis.

We will start today by visiting Euromos (The Temple of Zeus) &nbsp;located 50 kilometers away from Bodrum. The city was part of the Delian League and minted its own coins between the 2nd century BC and 2nd century AD. Most of this site is in ruins, with the exception of the 2nd century temple dedicated to Zeus Lepsynos. Due to excavations and restoration work done by Turkish archaeologists in the 1970’s. Sixteen of the temple's Corinthian style columns and inscriptions in honor of important citizens can still be seen today along with ruins of a large theater and remains of the city's defense towers and city walls. Close by lies the Labranda Ancient Ruins, which was once a sacred ancient city where many religious people visited for worship. The ancient site is nearly on top of the mountain and the views are just spectacular. This once sacred precinct, was excavated by a Swedish archeological team and the remaining structures have been confirmed to date back to the Roman period. Many ruins can still be seen such as the well-house, the east baths, the restored parts of the Doric house, the west stoa and adjoining terraces, the south baths and the ruins of a Church.

The next stop on our tour is Altinkum. This area has three beautiful beaches which are surrounded by the magnificent blue waters of the Aegean Sea. Excellent water sport amenities can be found here along with many bars and restaurants. We will then visit Didyma (Temple of Apollo) known throughout the ancient world as the site of the colossal Temple of Apollo, it was the third and largest temple that the Greeks built around a natural spring that they believed was the source of the oracle’s prophetic power. Moving on with our day we will visit The Dilek Peninsula which is one of the most important natural monuments in Turkey. It is characterized by the spectacular beauty of Mediterranean flora along with breathtaking scenery. This area is home to several endangered species and many reptiles, mammals, birds, and sea turtles. The Dilek Peninsula and National Park has many beaches and secluded bays, and the most important ones in the area are Kalamaki Beach, Icmeler, Kavakli and Karapinar. All of these beaches will provide tour members with endless beauty, calm clear waters, sandy and pebbled textures and fantastic scenery, perfect for relaxation, swimming and snorkeling.&nbsp;

Today will start by visiting Kusadasi. It is a wonderful beach resort town and a very important cruise ship destination. The area is known for being one of the most attractive cities within Turkey due to its palm tree lined beaches, endless range of shops and markets and it is in close proximity to many important historical sites. We will then travel to the town of Selcuk where we will visit the magnificent Efes Ancient City, which is an ancient port that was once considered the most important Greek city and the most important trading center within the Mediterranean region. It now remains as an interesting archaeological site and Christian pilgrimage destination where the remains of a large theater and the Library of Celsus can be seen. Much of the ancient city's history is unknown however a few marble columns belonging to the Temple of Artemis can also be found. South of the ancient city the The House of the Virgin Mary can be explored, the domed shaped chapel was officially declared a shrine of the Roman Catholic Church in 1896, and since then it has become a popular place of worship. On our tour of Efes Ancient City, tour members can also visit the Basilica of St. John, the monumental church was built in the 4th century over the tomb of Saint John the Divine. Constructed by Emperor Justinian and his wife Theodora, it was designed in the shape of a cross and covered with six huge domes.

We will start our day in the small seaside town of Didim, known for its long sandy beaches, clear blue sea, and ancient ruins. It is a district on the Aegean coast of western Turkey and lies 123 kilometers from the provincial capital city of Aydin. This town has its own microclimate, which provides many days of sun and warm winter months, allowing residents to use the beaches and engage in watersports even within the coldest month of January. We will then visit Pirene Ancient City positioned between the renowned tourist hotspots of Kusadasi and Bodrum. At this ancient Greek city, tour members can witness several remarkable ancient structures, including the Temple of Athena and the well-preserved Bouleuterion. The site also boasts the remains of a Greek theater, Roman baths and gymnasiums, a ruined ancient synagogue, and the house where Alexander the Great stayed during his battle against Miletus. Close by lies Milet Ancient City which was once an important port city during ancient times. Impressive Hellenistic and Roman ruins can be explored including the Great Theatre, the fascinating Miletus Museum, Byzantine Castle, a shrine dedicated to Apollo, temple ruins, an agora, and the Baths of Faustina.

Today we will visit one of the most developed towns within Bodrum, Yalikavak. The town has become a very popular tourist destination in recent years due to it being home to one of Turkey’s most luxurious and popular marinas. Many wonderful beaches, luxurious hotels, clear blue seas and famous windmills can be seen in this area. We will then sail to Catalada Island &nbsp;formerly known as Volo. This beautiful island is located 5 kilometers west of Bodrum in the Aegean Sea. Known for its iconic hills, tourist hotspots and it is a popular location for scuba diving enthusiasts.

On the final day of the tour, we will depart from Bodrum at 9:00 am. It is one of the most prestigious tourist destinations in Turkey and is often visited by celebrities over the summer months. It is well known for hosting luxurious yachts, high-end hotels, fashionable boutiques, and glamorous cars. The tour will take us through the city of Bodrum and the Bodrum Peninsula. The city is also a gateway for nearby beach towns and resorts that tour members can discover.
