The Island of Corfu, Magical Towns and Rich History

Corfu is described as one of the most romantic and beautiful islands in the Ionian Sea. It is one of the Mediterranean’s most popular holiday locations, showcasing large green hills, luxurious mansions, breathtaking beaches, fascinating historical sites, and a rich cultural heritage. With influences from the Venetians, the French and the English, Corfu Island is a fantastic place to explore. Here, tour members can wander around the labyrinth of narrow cobblestone alleys, discovering museums, fortresses, and churches, or visit the famous Liston promenade and Spianada Square. As for its beaches, the most popular include Paleokastritsa and Agios Gordios, known for their beautiful surroundings, sandy textures, and clear turquoise waters.

Today's adventure will take us from Corfu to Paxos Island. Paxos Island is well known for its magnificent beaches, with the most popular being situated on the eastern and northern parts of the island. There are three small seaside villages on the island; these include Lakka, Longos, and Paxos Island’s Gaios, which we will visit on today's tour. Gaios is the island's capital town; it is surrounded by a breathtaking landscape and situated around a natural harbor where many of the cultural and trade activities take place. Despite attracting many tourists during the summer season, it maintains its traditional character due to the 19th-century buildings and narrow ancient alleys. Our journey will now lead us to Antipaxos Island, which is located opposite Paxos. This picturesque, tranquil mini-island is also known for its wonderful beaches. Tour members will have the opportunity to visit the most famous and popular beach of Antipaxos Island’s Voutoumi Beach. It is a tropical oasis, situated in a huge cove with large rocks covering both sides of the pebbled terrain, surrounded by shallow, crystal-clear waters and taverns serving locally made wines.

Today's journey will lead us from Paxos Island to Lefkada Island. Lefkada Island is also known as the ‘Caribbean of Greece’ due to its alluring atmosphere and impressive landscape. Its beaches are famous from Sandy to shingly textures, with hypnotic turquoise waters all of which are surrounded by wonderful nature and dramatic cliffs. The most popular include Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Kathisma however there are more secluded shores to discover such as Mylos, Kalamitsi and Kaminia. Along with its beaches there are several quaint seaside villages to explore such as Nidri and Agios Nikitas. Within the main town lies the heart of the island. Tour members can wander around the narrow streets, taste local delicacies, visit the Venetian Agia Mavra Castle, museums and 18th-century churches. Other important landmarks worth visiting include the lighthouse, the wonderful Faneromeni monastery and Melissa gorge.

Today's tour will guide us from Lefkada Island to Ithaka Island. Ithaca Island is world-famous for being the home of Odysseus. This iconic island is surrounded by thriving Mediterranean greenery, charming villages, magnificent beaches, and authentic charm. While exploring this magical place, tour members will have the opportunity to visit Vathi (Ithaca Island), which is one of the most picturesque villages, maintaining its traditional integrity despite its developments in tourism. It is the most popular place to visit and is the hive of most of the island's activity. On the island there are several relaxing yet popular beaches to enjoy, such as Filiatro, Sarakiniko, and Agios Ioannis, and more secluded locations to discover, including Gidaki Beach. Along with visiting villages and beaches, some other popular attractions include Loizos Cave and Katharon Monastery. We will now take a trip to Lazaretto Island, once known as Agios Dimitrios. This area has a very difficult history, from being used as a quarantine station for sailors to being a concentration camp and execution area for prisoners of war. Along with the island's thriving green landscape, tour members can visit a 16th-century monastery, a hospital, the remains of the wall where prisoners were executed, the graves of fallen soldiers, and the small church of St. Demetrius. Due to its turbulent past, Lazaretto Island was declared a national monument to honor those who died here during the Second World War.

&nbsp;On today's journey we will sail from Ithaka Island to Kefalonia Island. Kefalonia Island is referred to by many as the jewel of the Ionian Sea. The island is well known due to its presence in the movie Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, as well as being one of the most photographed places in Greece. It is also the largest in the Ionian Sea, showcasing a spectacular landscape and exotic beaches. Tour members can explore this postcard-worthy area by visiting magical caves, admiring the wonderful mountains, indulging in local cuisine, exploring historical sites, and visiting authentic Greek villages. The island's lively nightlife and spectacular beaches such as Myrtos, Antisamos, Lourdas, and Skala are sure to make visitors fall in love with this destination.

We will now travel from Kefalonia Island to Zakynthos Island. Zakynthos Island is known for its striking sandy beaches and pristine waters. Also known as Zante, tour members will have the opportunity to enjoy many interesting beaches here, such as Navagio Beach, where the remains of a smuggler’s shipwreck on the sand can be seen, and Xigia Beach, which has waters containing a large amount of sulfur, said to be healthy for the skin. Porto Limnionas Beach, which is known for its magical caves, and Kalamaki Beach, which is characterized by impressive rock formations. Other spectacular shores within Zakynthos include Laganas Beach, Gerakas Beach, and Spiantz Beach. The capital of the island, Zakynthos Town, has many historic attractions for tour members to visit, such as Saint Mark Square, the Venetian Castle, Solomos Square, Agios Dionyssios Church, the ruins of the Venetian Bridge, and Keri Lighthouse.

We will now sail from Zakynthos Island to Nafpaktos. Nafpaktos is a medieval town with a charming atmosphere and laid-back vibe. The most popular place within the town is the port of Nafpaktos, which is surrounded by stone walls and towers, full of history, culture, and breathtaking views of the sea. We will now visit the famous archaeological site of the Venetian Castle of Nafpaktos. This well-preserved castle is described as one of the most beautiful in all of Greece. Towering over Nafpaktos and the bay of Patras. The construction of the castle commenced in ancient times, with influences from the Venetians and the Turks. Built with the purpose of protection during wars, the castle had five defensive walls: two that go down into the sea and three walls at different heights for maximum protection. The last attraction on today's agenda is Nafpaktos/Fethiye Tzami Mosque, built in 1499; it was the area's main place of worship throughout the Ottoman period. It has been greatly restored in recent years, with a marble plaque reminding visitors of the famous sea battle of 1571.

Today's journey will lead us from Nafpaktos to Galaxidi. Galaxidi is a charming coastal town located within the mainland of Greece, sheltered by the mountainous landscapes of Fokida. The town provides visitors with a tribute to Greek sailors, maintaining the traditions of the past in its captain's residences, neoclassical houses, and statues paying tribute to its maritime history. Tour members will have the opportunity to take a leisurely stroll around the two harbors, and walk through the traditional ancient town, to discover many significant sights. This unique town is full of attractions and landmarks such as the Holy Temple of Agios Nikolaos, the temple of Agia Paraskevi, the Tomb of King Locros, the Nautical and Ethnological Museum, and the Monastery of Metamorphosis tou Sotiros.

On the final day of the tour, we will depart from Galaxidi to Athens. Athens is situated in the region of Attica, off the coast of the Saronic Gulf. It is the historic origin of many aspects of western civilization, as it has one of the longest histories in the world. It has been inhabited for more than 3,000 years, leaving many historical attractions for visitors to explore, such as the Temple of Olympian Zeus and ancient ruins such as Panathenaic Stadium and the Acropolis Fortification Walls. The city attracts visitors from all over the world, showcasing its mythology, history, culture, shopping, and vibrant nightlife scene. The area is a magnet for yachts and boats that arrive at the luxurious marinas to enjoy the glistening, clear sea and the area’s stunning beaches and bays.
