Nafplion is a scenic town and a vibrant harbor on the coast of the Argolic Gulf in Greece. This charming town on the Peloponnese peninsula also has many different spellings such as Nafplio, Nauplion, Nauplia, and Navplion. It is considered to be one of the most charming and beautiful in the Aegean sea, known for its rich history and stunning Venetian architecture. Every year, numerous visitors, recreational sailors, and boaters are drawn to the town's historical and natural attractions. The name of the town comes from the Byzantine era, meaning “New Town'' in the old Venetian language. Mythology states that the founder of the town was Nafplios, son of the god Poseidon, and it was the first capital of the modern Greek state.
Discovering the Beaches
The main swimming area of Nafplion is Arvanitia Beach. It is surrounded by lush greenery, and rocky cliffs. This small, pebbly beach is perfect for swimming and snorkeling, and its calm waters make it an excellent spot for families with children. It has a scenic promenade, with plenty of cafes and restaurants offering stunning views of the sea and the town. Nafplion is generally warm and sunny during the summer months and mild in the winters. There is a rich marine life with a variety of fish and sea creatures, along with transparent waters.
There are two marinas near Arvanitia Beach, Nafplion Port, and Drepano Marina along with some anchorage spots. Nafplion Port is in the town center with approximately 300 morning berths and a variety of amenities. The most popular beach is Karathona Beach, located just a few kilometers from the town center. It is a long stretch of golden sand mixed with pebbles and equipped with all the modern amenities of a world-class beach. Tolo Beach, is a sandy beach situated in a sheltered bay 5 km south of Nafplio, with all the necessary amenities and is also popular for aquatic activities and sports. The underwater world of Bourtzi Island is popular among scuba divers as it is covered in colorful sponges and sea anemones, optimum water depths. The town offers everything needed for a family-friendly trip, and services such as diving courses and a sea kayaking school.
