Pedi Bay

Set sail for Pedi Bay and let its laid-back atmosphere and humble small-town offerings create memories that will last a lifetime, whether you seek a gentle day of swimming or a calm overnight location with easy access to local treats.

Nestled on the Greek island of Symi, Pedi Bay offers a tranquil retreat for yachtsmen seeking a slice of laid-back local life in the Dodecanese archipelago. Also sometimes spelled Pethi and Pedhi, the small fishermen’s bay is located just a few kilometers away from the bustling main harbor of the island called Yialos, or Symi Harbor. Rather unlike its neighbor, Pedi has only a few local shops and tavernas and a much slower pace of life. The natural harbor is used mostly by locals for mooring their personal boats as well as the occasional visiting yachtsmen. People who love it here return for its many relaxing little beaches and small-town charm with easy accessibility to the rest of the island.

Atmosphere and Background

Pedi Bay exudes a laid-back and peaceful atmosphere, providing a perfect escape from the bustling world. The little community that has slowly been built around it exhibits an authentic Greek charm with its picturesque landscapes, traditional architecture, and friendly locals. The surrounding hills, dotted with olive groves and charming houses, add to the captivating ambiance. Within the bay’s warm embrace, visitors can observe a romantic sunrise over the neighboring mountains of Turkiye.

Legend has it that the bay was frequented by the mythical nymphs, who visited Pedi to bathe in the crystal-clear waters. Their enchanting presence lingers in every corner of the bay, making it a truly magical destination. Additionally, in The Iliad, Symi is mentioned as the home of King Nireus, who fought alongside the Greeks during the Trojan War and was described as the handsomest man after Achilles. Imagining a fascinating figure like him sailing across the bay of Pedi adds yet another layer of magic and intrigue.

Wind, Water, and Anchorage Conditions

Pedi Bay prides itself on its safe and well-protected anchorage, making it an ideal spot for yachting enthusiasts. The deeply cut bay is long and narrow, with ample protection on all sides, although a few strong gusts do come through. Visiting boats can dock at the pier or anchor off in 6 to 10 meters. There aren’t many boat services, but fuel can be delivered here. The beaches rarely get crowded in this sleepy little bay, despite the slight increase in tourism in the months of July and August. However, the waters of the bay can get a little busy due to local fishermen, cargo ships, and residents’ vessels, so it is wise to operate with caution and observe all local laws while maneuvering one’s boat.

Beach Conditions

The beaches around Pedi Bay offer a mix of sand and pebbles, providing a unique texture underfoot that may require sea shoes. The warm Mediterranean climate ensures enjoyable sea temperatures throughout the summer, making swimming and water activities a delight. The period with the warmest waters begins in mid-July and lasts until early October, with an average temperature above 75°F (24°C). The waters are also fairly shallow for quite a way in, creating a lovely splashing zone for families with kids.

Umbrellas and sunbeds are available at some of the beaches, while others provide a more rugged and secluded experience. Because the beach is so narrow around the entire bay, it's really easy to keep an eye on young children or pets, another benefit for families. All beaches are run by different hotels and restaurants, one right after the other, so it's easy to find one with the exact facilities visitors are looking for.

Things to Do Nearby

There are many fun things to do nearby for those who like to set out on shore and experience local culture. Perhaps the most popular activity is exploring the town of Symi. Just a short distance away, it beckons visitors with its colorful neoclassical mansions, cobblestone streets, and enchanting harbor. Visitors can spend a day wandering through its narrow alleys, visiting charming boutiques, and enjoying delectable seafood in the local tavernas.

There are also historic attractions on the island. The most prominent of these is Panormitis Monastery, which is situated on the southern tip of Symi Island. This Byzantine monastery houses a stunning icon of the Archangel Michael and is a significant place of pilgrimage for locals.
