Dodecanese Islands, Brilliant Architecture and Fine History 

Rhodes Island is the largest island of the Dodecanese group in southeastern Greece and the most easterly in the Aegean Sea. Also known as Knights Island, it has a long and rich history, leaving behind many ancient buildings for tourists to admire today. It is a place where the strong medieval aspects blend perfectly with the traditional Greek ones. Rhodes Island is full of natural beauty, with wonderful beaches facing the pine woods on the mountain sides. This Mediterranean gem boasts centuries-old history along with many attractions, archaeological sites, medieval monuments, and cosmopolitan resorts for tour members to explore. Our tour will depart at 4:00 p.m. from Rhodes Island's Mandraki Marina. This harbor is a symbol of ancient history and is believed to be the site of the ancient statue of the Colossus of Rhodes. The port is a cherished symbol of the island, where the two bronze deer figures of 'Elefos' and 'Elafina', can be seen. This marina is a great place to start our Mediterranean adventure of the Dodecanese Islands.

Today's adventure will take us from Rhodes Island to Symi Island. Symi Island is a stunning place, known for its beaches and charming harbor. The colorful neoclassical houses and architecture of the quaint villages are a highlight for all who visit. The main town is called Symi town; it is divided into two parts: the harborside, which is called Gialos, and the part on the slopes of the hills, called Chorio, which are connected by a long staircase called Kali Strata. Located close to Rhodes Island and a few miles away from the Turkish mainland, there are many things to do and see. Tour members can walk around the old town to admire the picturesque main harbor, visit ancient ruins and museums, and relax on fabulous beaches. There are also many restaurants, bars, and small souvenir shops that can be found. The most popular attraction within Symi is the Monastery of Panormitis, on the southern side of the island. It is the main church of Symi Island and was built to honor Archangel Michael, the patron saint and protector of sailors. Here, tour members can admire exquisite architecture in a beautiful and natural setting. The large 18th-century Venetian-styled building has the highest baroque bell tower in the world, and a wonderful courtyard decorated with exotic trees and plants can also be seen. At this location, there are also two fascinating museums to discover exhibits such as silver icons, Russian epitaphs, ecclesiastical utensils, ship models, folk art, and Byzantine manuscripts. As for its beaches, there are many; some are sandy and others are pebbled. Some of the most popular include Nos, Nimborio, also known as Emporios Beach, Pedi, Gialos, and Panormitis Beach.

Today's tour will guide us from &nbsp;Symi Island to Nisyros Island. Nisyros Island is a heavenly location that is unspoiled and secluded. The main attraction of the island is its volcano, which is situated in the center of Gyali. It is the youngest volcano in Greece, at only 160,000 years old, and it is still active today. The island is also dotted with some picturesque villages, which have traditional architecture and a laid-back atmosphere such as Mandraki Village which is the main port and capital of the island. As one of the biggest settlements, it offers many tourist facilities, such as a variety of shops, bars, authentic taverns, a traditional vibe, showcasing beautiful whitewashed houses and several sightseeing locations. Some sights worth visiting on Nisyros Island include the old fortress of Paleokastro, an ancient cemetery with several tombs dating back to the 6th and 7th centuries, and the Monastery of Panagia Spillani, which is one of the oldest places of worship within Nisyros. Inside the monastery also lie a cave, a church, and a small library exhibiting historical documents, books, and ancient relics. As for beaches, the most interesting is Hohlaki, which has fascinating black pebbles that were formed from volcanic lava.

&nbsp;Today's journey will take us from Nisyros Island to Kos Island. Kos Island is the second most visited island in the Dodecanese, known for its historical sites, wonderful beaches, and thriving vegetation. Its history dates back over 5,000 years, and many traces from the Ancient Greeks, the Romans, the Venetians, the medieval knights, and the Ottomans can be seen. Popular sites on the island include Neratzia medieval castle, the ancient Greek Agora, and Antimachia Castle. The island has many fantastic beaches to discover, with a range of different atmospheres, textures, and amenities. Some of the more well-known beach locations include Kardamena Beach, Tigaki Beach, Mastichari Beach, Marmari Beach, and Kefalos. Within Kos, we will visit Kos Asklepion, which was constructed to advance the teachings of Hippocrates, who was considered the leader of ancient medicine. It was once the best healing center in the ancient world, and his teachings towards modern medicine and holistic approaches to health still remain today.

Today's journey will lead us from Kos Island to Tilos Island. Tilos Island is a small and secluded destination with a beautiful natural setting and a relaxing atmosphere. The beaches here are wonderful, boasting crystal-clear waters and a picturesque ambiance. Several villages can be found on the island, such as Megalo Chorio, which is the island capital. Within Megalo Chorio, there are several historical sites to visit, such as the medieval castle, built by the Knights of the Order of St. John; the small church of Prophet Elias; Mesaria Castle; the Archaeological Museum; and a cave where the fossilized remains of deer and dwarf elephants can be seen. Livadia is the main port and the most touristic village. There are many facilities that can be found here, such as restaurants, shops, taverns, cafes, a variety of old churches, a lighthouse, and a small medieval harbor. Mikro Chorio is the most unique village on the island. It was built in the 5th century, rising up above the village of Livadia. After World War II, all of its residents left to start new lives elsewhere. Today, it is still completely deserted. Ruins of a castle, stone houses, churches, and ancient murals can be seen, along with centuries-old oak and olive trees, many birds and goats. During the summer months, a bar opens up for the island's visitors. The strategically placed lights in the old abandoned houses create a very unique and unusual vibe for everyone who visits.

Today's journey will take us from Tilos Island to Chalki Island. Chalki Island is the largest of a group of islets that lie to the west of Rhodes Island. The island is not well known and has a low profile; however, it is a perfect location for either a chilled-out day or a day of exploring. Chalki welcomes all its visitors with a natural harbor, the picturesque town of Nimporio, and a wonderful food culture. The most enjoyable way to enjoy the island is on foot, where tour members can witness ancient alleyways, neoclassical stone houses, and impressive black and white pebbles that have to be used to make mosaic patterns. Although this island has not been affected by mass tourism, there are many places worth visiting, such as the 19th-century town hall and clock tower, numerous churches, monasteries, museums, a deserted medieval village, the remains of the Castle of the Knights, and historic windmills. As for beaches, there are many to choose from. Some have sandy shores, and some are pebbled. A few of the most popular include Pontamos Beach, Areta Beach, and Giali Beach. For those interested in diving, Chalki is famous for its pristine water clarity, which remains clear up to 40 meters deep. There are also many underwater caves, a shipwreck, and lots of marine species to discover. The restaurants here pride themselves on producing home-made food, using local ingredients, and many establishments use authentic cooking styles such as wood-fire ovens to create their own take on wonderful local delicacies.

The journey will now guide us from Chalki Island to Rhodes Island. It has a lengthy and impressive history and a turbulent past full of unexpected twists and turns. Many historic buildings, archaeological sites, and medieval monuments can be seen. The most popular area to visit is Rhodes Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built by the Knights of St. John and is the birthplace of the city. It is home to many interesting attractions, such as the Rhodes Grand Master Palace, a medieval castle that showcases one of the rarest examples of Gothic architecture. The Byzantine Church of St. Spyridon can also be seen; the single-naved domed basilica is made out of limestone and dates back to the 18th century. Tour members can also visit the Rhodes Suleymaniye Mosque, originally built after the Ottoman conquest of Rhodes in 1522 and later reconstructed in 1808. It was named by Sultan Suleiman to commemorate his conquest of Rhodes. Our day will conclude at Rhodes Island’s Mandraki Marina. When stepping onto the port, members will be greeted by the Church of the Annunciation, or, as it's locally known, the Evangelismos Church, which is an architectural masterpiece. The small size of this ancient marina makes it easy to visit nearby sites such as the statues of Elafos and Elafina, the windmills, and the Fort of St. Nicholas, along with enjoying the variety of cuisine available from the street food vendors that lie along the harbor.

The final day of our tour will conclude at Rhodes Island. This destination is the perfect place to make some fantastic memories. From taking a stroll around the historical town, admiring medieval monuments, discovering castles, and indulging in culture to relaxing on spectacular beaches and dining in high-class restaurants, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Many of the popular historical sites can be found in the old town, which we visited yesterday. Tour participants will have the opportunity to explore the old town in more detail and discover attractions that you may have missed. There are also many other things to do on Rhodes Island, such as shopping, visiting the Acropolis of Lindos, taking a trip to the Valley of Butterflies, or exploring the &nbsp;monastery of Filerimos. For those who prefer a relaxing end to the tour, the beaches of Lindos, Anthony Quinn, Faliraki, Tsambika, Kallithea, and Agathi are some of the best on the island, with several offering water sports activities to partake in.
