Anthony Quinn Bay

Devote a day to exploring the enchanting waters and dramatic landscape of Anthony Quinn Bay, and you'll discover a paradise that will forever remain etched in your memories.

Rhodes Island in Greece offers a myriad of beautiful destinations for yachtsmen, but none quite as captivating as Anthony Quinn Bay. Tucked away on the southeast coast of the island, about 4 kilometers south of Faliraki Beach, this secluded bay embraces visitors with its tranquil atmosphere, stunning views, and rich tapestry of marine life. The small beach is only about 10 meters wide and 250 meters long, lending it a cozy atmosphere. Additionally, it is only about 15 kilometers from the Medieval City of Rhodes, making it a convenient stop during any tour of the island’s beloved landmarks. It owes its unique name to a famous Mexican-American actor who filmed at the breathtaking location 80 years ago and fell in love with its timeless splendor.

Nestled within a small cove surrounded by rocky cliffs, the bay is quite petite but offers ample space for yachts to anchor. What it lacks in size, it more than compensates for with its captivating atmosphere. The rocky shores are shrouded in cliffs richly forested with pine trees, which reflect beautifully in the emerald blue waters of the Aegean Sea. It is not a place for children due to the sharp rocks, so it is very popular among discerning adults. The crystal-clear waters, dramatic rock formations, and lush greenery create a postcard-perfect setting that exudes tranquility, providing an ideal refuge for yachtsmen seeking relaxation.

Legends and Historic Facts

With its rich history dating back to ancient times, Anthony Quinn Bay has its fair share of legends and history. According to local folklore, it was once a pirate hideout due to its secluded location.

Its transformation into a beloved beach spot began when Anthony Quinn himself leased the bay for 99 years and attempted to buy it to secure its preservation. In the 1960s, when it was known as Vagies Bay, Quinn arrived to film scenes from the Oscar-winning film “The Guns of Navarone”. He fell in love with the emerald waters and dramatic cliffs of the cove and endeavored to turn it into a retreat for actors. While his dream was never realized, the bay still bears his name 80 years later.

Wind, Water, and Anchorage Conditions

Anthony Quinn Bay's position mitigates the impact of strong winds, creating a relatively sheltered spot for yachts to anchor. However, it's important to exercise caution during days of strong northerly or easterly winds, as these may increase the swell and make anchorage outside the bay more challenging. The bay offers excellent swimming and snorkeling opportunities, with clear waters teeming with marine life and hidden underwater caves waiting to be explored. It is not recommended for long-term stays as there are no boat services available.

Visiting the Beach

Whether visitors are seeking relaxation or adventure, Anthony Quinn Bay has something to offer everyone. Guests can sunbathe on the pebbly beach, bask in the sun on the rocky outcrops, or take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters. The seabed and shores are quite rocky, so it is recommended to wear sea shoes both in and out of the water. Otherwise, guests should be mindful of the sharp rocks. From June to early October, the average water temperature is above 76°F (24°C), which is very pleasant for swimming comfortably.

Snorkeling enthusiasts will be delighted by the abundant marine life, while exploring the underwater rock formations is a thrilling adventure for divers. There are equipment rentals and a scuba diving center onshore. Guests can also rent a kayak or paddleboard, offering a unique perspective of the bay and its surrounding cliffs. At the top of a steep hill, there is a restaurant that serves light meals and drinks and can be accessed by a staircase. It is the best place to enjoy a panoramic view of this stunning locale.

Additionally, due to its small size, the bay can feel a bit crowded, particularly in the peak tourism months of July and August. Guests who wish to avoid the crowds are advised to arrive earlier in the day or consider a visit during the less busy shoulder seasons.
