Marathi Island

For those who need a total break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Marathi Island beckons the seafarer with its tranquil atmosphere, enchanting lack of distractions, and a pristine sandy beach.

Popular Yacht Charter

Nestled in the crystalline waters of the Aegean Sea, Marathi Island, also known as Marathos, is a hidden gem that captivates the hearts of discerning yachtsmen. Lying east of the popular holy island of Patmos, Marathi is among a group of tiny islands and islets in the Dodecanese archipelago called the Arkioi Islands, which are less frequented by mass tourism and tend to retain an air of isolation and peace. The miniscule island is only 36 hectares (about a third of one km²) and is often called “Greece’s least inhabited island”. There are no roads or cars, no shops, only three tavernas, and a few rooms to rent. Its wide, sandy beach and utter lack of distractions make it the ultimate getaway for those who crave total serenity.

Marathi Island exudes an ethereal tranquility that envelopes visitors upon their arrival. The medley of azure waters, rocky shorelines, and Mediterranean greenery coalesce harmoniously, creating a captivating and awe-inspiring landscape. The total lack of noise or light pollution creates an aura of peace and grants some of the best views of full moons, stars, and sunsets in the world. As visitors moor their yachts, a sense of peace and serenity washes over them, immersing guests in the island's unique and beguiling atmosphere.

Lore and History

Though it is believed that Marathi has been inhabited for about 900 years, its history is predominantly handed down orally through the one or two families that have remained. Though at one point, it is asserted, the island had up to 69 permanent residents, today there are only about a dozen in the summer and only about three in the winter. This makes it intriguingly difficult to get a handle on the true history of the island.

The current caretakers of Marathi are the Emilianoi family, who arrived in 1977. They claim that their grandfather lived 105 years on the island, fathering 24 children who were also born there. Whatever the truth may be, today the residents primarily work in tourism and fishing, and Marathi is a refuge for wildlife and travelers who wish to get away from it all.

Wind, Water, and Anchorage Conditions

Marathi Island benefits from favorable wind patterns, making it an ideal destination for sailing enthusiasts. The Meltemi wind, a refreshing northern wind, blesses the local waters during the summer months, providing smooth sailing experiences. Furthermore, the island's protected and well-maintained natural harbor offers secure anchorage, ensuring peace of mind for yachtsmen.

Anchoring in the sheltered bays of Marathi Island allows guests to appreciate its unspoiled beauty while ensuring a safe and comfortable stay. Be sure to seek local advice regarding the best anchorages based on weather conditions and each vessel's requirements. Most boats can simply moor anywhere in the main settlement area among the many laid moorings. The cove can get quite busy with visiting tours and day-trippers throughout the day, especially in the peak tourism months of July and August; however, the crowds are typically gone by evening. The best times to experience the island’s purest tranquility are during the shoulder seasons of spring and fall.

Things to Do

The great thing about Marathi is that there isn’t much to do. This may not be ideal for families with children to entertain. However, for those who simply want to relax on a sun-drenched beach, it is perfect. There are just three tavernas, a few pensions, two jetties, a cemetery, a tiny Greek Orthodox church, some goats, and a lovely sandy beach. Visitors can traverse the tiny isle on foot in a single afternoon. There aren’t any shops, but snacks and water can be acquired in the tavernas. That being said, visitors should ensure that all necessities are brought along with them to the island.

The only settlement rests on the east coast of the island in a central location that is well protected by the surrounding land masses. The beach has soft, white sand that doesn’t require sea shoes until it gets hotter in the afternoons. The waters are shallow, calm, and warm, averaging about 75°F (23°C), which is very comfortable for swimming and snorkeling. There are sunbeds and parasols to rent, and one of the most popular activities is sitting down along the water with a good book. Marathi also boasts a few secluded bays that are best explored by boat.

When visitors to Marathi have done enough relaxing on the beach, it’s nice to hike the goat paths of the island. There are a few interesting rock formations, unexplained ruins, and an adorable little church called Agios Nikolaos to discover. From the top of the hills, brave explorers are rewarded with stunning views of the water and neighboring islets. Visitors can cap off each day by savoring the authentic culinary delights at the tavernas, which serve traditional Greek and Mediterranean cuisine made with fresh seafood, locally grown produce, and exceptional regional wines.
