Popular Yacht Charter

Nera Island, located among the Dodecanese Islands of Greece, is a must-visit destination for yachtsmen seeking an idyllic and secluded paradise. It lies off the southern tip of Kalymnos Island, just opposite the village of Vlychadia. The island is completely uninhabited, with only a few abandoned buildings on its shores and a significant seagull population. It is quite small, often classified as an islet, and can be explored on foot in a matter of a few hours. The secluded isle is home to completely serene beaches and hilly landscapes that have been miraculously unmarred by human habitation. From its stunning vistas to its pristine waters, Nera Island is a true haven for the discerning yachtsman.

Background and Atmosphere

The word “nera” means “water” in Greek, and it is believed that this name derives from the freshwater springs on the island, which feed the many trees and olive groves at its center. Aside from its wild nature, there isn’t much else on the island, but there are two buildings: an abandoned taverna and the Church of the Holy Cross, which used to belong to a monastery.

Despite its proximity to busy and vibrant Kalymnos, Nera Island remains relatively untouched by tourism, making it a perfect escape for those seeking a serene and isolated hideaway. The ancient monks are long gone, and today visitors will only find a rugged, rocky coastline punctuated by hidden coves and crystal-clear waters. The azure sea stretches out as far as the eye can see, creating a stunning contrast against the steep cliffs and lush greenery. As the sun sets, the sky erupts into a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors, painting an awe-inspiring panorama that will leave guests breathless. The peaceful atmosphere is accentuated by the absence of crowds, even in the peak tourism months of summer, making it the perfect destination to unwind and reconnect with nature.

Anchorage Conditions on Nera

Nera Island provides a few anchorages suitable for yachts of varying sizes. The primary anchorage area is found on the east side of the island, where a protected bay provides safe mooring opportunities. The sheltered anchorage, marked by the abandoned taverna and a manmade jetty, offers protection from prevailing winds, ensuring a peaceful rest for yachtsmen embarking on their island exploration. The windier part of the year lasts from early November to early April, when wind speeds average more than 13.0 miles per hour, and the period with calmer winds lasts from April to October, with an average hourly wind speed of 10.8 miles per hour.

The small harbor can only fit a few vessels. On the very rare occasion that more than 3 or 4 boats arrive for the day, it can be difficult to maneuver, and it's recommended that visitors find an alternative nearby. On stillmore rare occasions, the island’s singular taverna is operational, but it is fairly unpredictable, so guests should arrive with everything they’ll need for their visit.

Things to Do

While Nera Island exudes tranquility, it also offers numerous activities to keep visitors enthralled. Exploring the island's untamed terrain is a must, revealing hidden hiking trails that wind through olive groves and past the historic church. The breathtaking panoramic views from various vantage points make the hikes well worth the effort.

Nera Island also boasts a myriad of secluded beaches, each with its own charm. The water conditions around the island are generally calm, making it an excellent spot for swimmers of all levels. Snorkeling enthusiasts will also find delight in the vibrant marine life and clear waters, which provide a haven for underwater exploration. The time of year with the most pleasant swimming temperatures lasts from early July to early October, with an average water temperature above 73°F (23°C). Sea shoes are recommended for the rocky shores that line the coast. Additionally, while the waters are often calm enough for safe swimming, it is not highly recommended for young children due to the lack of significant shallows, facilities, or sandy spots.

For fishing enthusiasts, the island's bountiful waters provide a perfect opportunity to cast a line and try their luck at catching the local seafood treasures. Additionally, paddleboarding and kayaking along the tranquil coastlines are fantastic ways to absorb the island's natural beauty. However, as there are no facilities on the isle, guests will have to provide their own equipment.
