Popular Yacht Charter
Arkoi is a picturesque Dodecanese island nestled in the heart of the Aegean Sea, and among its myriad treasures, Tiganakia Beach stands out as a hidden paradise, offering an unforgettable experience for those seeking tranquility and natural beauty. Even though the island is only about 11 kilometers southeast of the holy island of Patmos, it feels far removed from mass tourism, with only about 50 permanent residents and numerous secluded beaches, like Tiganakia, boasting nothing but pure nature. Not only is Tiganakia Beach often reported as the most beautiful on the island, but it also ranks high among beaches in the entire South Aegean region.
Anchorage Conditions
Tiganakia Beach is the crowning jewel of a collection of islets and the southeast coast of Arkoi, which are collectively also known as Tiganakia. The beach is part of the mainland of the island, only about 2 kilometers from the main port, so visitors have the option of docking their vessels at the main harbor and hiking to the beach or approaching by water for a daytime anchorage.
The small bay of Tiganakia Beach is protected to the east and south by the islets of Avaptisto and an unnamed land mass that barely rises above sea level. The sandy bottom provides good holding, but the area is usually too gusty for an overnight stay unless visitors are willing to venture further south to the more protected channels between the other nearby islets. Typically, boating visitors only anchor with a line ashore for short swimming visits during their adventures in the area. While finding a spot to anchor, it is important to have a lookout on the bow because the area is not well charted and there are quite a few shallow spots that pose a risk of getting stuck.
Visiting the Beach
Tiganakia Beach boasts a captivating ambiance, emanating serenity and tranquility that effortlessly captures the hearts of all who visit. As visitors step onto its shores, they are greeted by crystal-clear turquoise waters, framed by gently sloping hills covered in Mediterranean vegetation that paint a dramatic backdrop against the vivid blue skies. Photography enthusiasts will be particularly keen to capture the stunning shades of blue that can be found along the many little coves in the area. The warm, golden shores invite guests to soak up the sun while relishing unparalleled views of the Aegean Sea.
The waters are very clear and usually quite calm and warm, making them perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and exploring the vibrant marine life that thrives in the area. Though the area is typically too shallow for scuba diving, snorkelers will be thrilled to discover schools of grouper, various kinds of colorful sea slugs, and sea urchins. Sea shoes are recommended, as the urchins can cause minor injuries if stepped on. From late June to early October, guests can expect water temperatures well above 72°F (22°C). Additionally, the waters are usually shallow and forgiving for weak swimmers, but this beach is not considered ideal for children due to the lack of facilities and other services.
As for the beach itself, Tiganakia's pristine shoreline entices visitors with its soft sand and pebbles, creating a perfect setting for relaxation. While it is not the largest beach on the island, its small size adds to its secluded charm. It is important to bring along any necessary items if visiting the beach, such as a parasol, a sunbed, and refreshments, as there are no rentals or businesses of any kind nearby. Lounge under the shade of a parasol, read a book, or take leisurely strolls along the shore to appreciate the unspoiled coastal beauty. The area is almost never crowded, even in the peak tourism months of July and August, so guests can expect a very peaceful swimming experience. If, by chance, the beach is crowded, there are many hidden coves on the islets nearby that offer a similar sense of seclusion.
