Popular Yacht Charter

Situated on the enchanting island of Syros in the Cyclades archipelago, Finikas Beach is a hidden gem that promises relaxing experiences for visitors from all walks of life. It is settled along the shores of Finikas, a small village of only 700 inhabitants on the southwest coast of the island, about 11 kilometers from the town of Ermoupoli. With its quaint local tavernas, crystal-clear waters, and excellent anchorage conditions, it is a popular destination for seafarers seeking relaxation.

The island of Syros itself is known for its rich history, captivating architecture, and vibrant local culture. As part of this breathtaking island, Finikas Beach offers a tranquil escape from the bustling towns of the region, inviting visitors to unwind and soak up the sun-kissed Aegean vibes. The soft golden sand stretches along the coastline, providing the perfect spot for sunbathing and relaxation, and the local businesses supply a vibrant atmosphere and excellent refreshments.

Conditions for Boats

The town of Finikas boasts a well-protected harbor that offers a safe and reliable anchorage point for yachtsmen. This port is the second largest on the island, after the port of Ermoupolis, so the marina facilities are top-notch, ensuring a comfortable stay. Many local fishing boats, yachts, and other vessels dock at Finikas port, because it is sheltered from the strong northern winds, called meltemi, which are common in this region. Vessels of varying sizes can find secure anchorage, with easy access to the shore for embarking on excursions, discovering local dining experiences, or taking the short walk to Finikas Beach.

Conditions for Beachgoers

Finikas Beach benefits from the unique geographical location within the protected harbor, which ensures relatively calm waters for easy and safe swimming. The crystal-clear waters surrounding the beach invite snorkelers and swimmers to enjoy the beauty of the underwater wonders that lie beneath the surface. The waters are also fairly shallow and safe for young swimmers, and they are generally a pleasant temperature. The period with the warmest waters lasts from late June to early October, with an average temperature of 72°F (22°C), and the month with the warmest water is August.

The shores of Finikas beach are pleasantly sandy with a few pebbles. The sand gets quite hot after midday so sea shoes are recommended. During the peak tourism season from July to August, the beach can get crowded by the afternoon, so it's recommended to go earlier in the day if one wishes to have a more tranquil experience. There are plenty of beach chairs and umbrellas for hire, as well as space for visitors to set up their own equipment. Additionally, the beach is surrounded by local cafes and tavernas, for those who wish to enjoy local snacks and drinks.

Local History and Attractions

While Finikas Beach itself is a captivating spot, the surrounding area offers even more attractions for visitors. The village of Finikas sits just a short walking distance from the beach and provides a glimpse into authentic Greek lifestyle and culture. Finikas, also sometimes spelled as ‘Foinikas,’ got its name from the ancient port of the Phoenicians that was established at modern-day Finikas Harbor. While in the area, travelers can also visit historic sites like the Church of Agios Panteleimonas and explore the town’s charming narrow streets lined with traditional white-washed houses and shop for unique handicrafts.

For those wishing to venture further, Syros Island offers a wealth of cultural and historical attractions. For example, the island's capital, Ermoupoli, showcases elegant neoclassical architecture, vibrant squares, and a bustling harbor. Travelers are encouraged to stroll through its picturesque streets and visit neoclassical masterpieces like the Apollon Theatre and the Town Hall.
