Despite the fact that this piece of history is said to be a shadow of its former self in terms of bustling public life, it still remains an important historical site in the town of Hvar owing to its historic wealth. It was the first church built on the island and the venue where judicial sentences were passed. Although it was built by locals, the interior altars and paintings were completed by artists from Venice.

Visiting the Bell Tower of St. Stephen’s Cathedral

The rectangular shape of St. Stephen's Cathedral's Bell Tower distinguishes it from other buildings. The square surrounding it was once one of the most popular spaces on the island. As one of the most important historical buildings in Hvar, visitors can discover history from the town's origins. In the bell tower, there is a stone relief of a Roman ship and a monument of the winged Erote, both dating back to the 2nd century, along with 16th century Venetian triptych artwork depicting St. Mary, St. John the Baptist, and St. Jerome. The location was once a square bustling with people on their way to public markets or meetings; now it is a peaceful haven.
