The Brijuni Archipelago, located in the Istria region of Croatia, is a popular destination for boat trips. Also known as the Brijuni National Park, it is made up of two larger islands, Veli Brijun and Mali Brijun, as well as twelve smaller islets and reefs. History

The Brijuni Archipelago has a rich history, dating back to ancient times when it served as a Roman Empire military base and naval station. In the 19th century, it became a popular destination for the wealthy, who constructed villas and gardens on the islands. The Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito also used it as a summer residence, called The White Villa. In 1900, animals such as deer and elephants were brought to the islands and became its trademark. In 1978, a safari park was established on the northern edge of Veliki Brijun, and in 1983, the Brijuni Islands were declared as a National Park.

What is the Brijuni Archipelago Famous For?

The Brijuni Archipelago is famous for its diverse flora, boasting about 600 indigenous plant species, and fauna, as well as its rich cultural heritage with evidence of human habitation dating back to prehistoric times and even dinosaur footprints. Visitors can explore the ancient Roman ruins, visit the safari park to see exotic animals, or take a boat tour to see the beautiful bays and beaches such as Saluga bay, Sveti Jeroli, also known as Saint Jerolim beach and more. The Brijuni archipelago also houses several cultural institutions, including the Ethnographic Museum, exhibiting the cultural heritage of the island, the Boat House, housing boats used for island tours, and the Josip Broz Tito on Brioni summer home of the former Yugoslav leader. Visitors also see the Byzantine Castrum archaeological site, which has finds from the Roman Empire and beyond. There is seemingly no end to the discoveries in this park. 

Places to Visit in Brijuni

Situated close to the Istrian Peninsula, Brijuni National Park, also known as the Brijuni Islands is an archipelago set within Croatia’s northern Adriatic Sea. There are a total of 14 islands, the largest being Veliki Brijun, followed by Mali Brijun. There are some incredible bays such as Sveti Jerolim, Saluga Beach, and more. Watersports and activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and kayaking are all popular here. On Verige Bay, the Roman Villa can be found, an ancient structure dating back to the 1st century BC. There are 150 species of birds, 600 indigenous plants, and abundant marine life, making it a much loved ecotourism site great for hiking, biking, and even golfing. It is worth noting that over time, golf carts have become the main transportation vehicle here. Visitors can also visit the Safari Park.  Additionally, on Veliki Brijun Island, over 200 dinosaur footprints were found in Brijuni Cretaceous Park. 

Although known for its ecological tourism, Brijuni has a number of historic and archeological sites. There are some historic religious sites such as St. Mary’s Church and Germain Church. During excavations here, they also found St. Mary's Basilica on the same complex. Close to this, the Byzantine Castrum was uncovered, a settlement which was built during the Roman Empire. Visitors can explore the Settlement of Gradina which is protected by three circular walls, and the Venetian castle and tower, built in the 12th century. Brijuni was the permanent residence of President Josip Broz Tito for over twenty years and his legacy can be learned at the island museum in the Boathouse. Visitors can also experience concerts and events at the Ulysses Theater on Mali Brijun. Although a national park, Brijuni is home to numerous hotels, educational and entertainment programs,  restaurants, and its own internal transportation. 

Best Time to Visit Brijuni

The Brijuni Archipelago, also known as the Brijuni National Park, is a stunning destination with a variety of activities and events to enjoy from snorkeling and kayaking to visiting archaeological sites like Byzantine Castrum. The best time to visit is during the summer months of June through September, when visitors can expect warm temperatures, sunshine, and an abundance of sea tourism activities such as boat tours and swimming. The weather on the islands varies by season, with mild temperatures and plenty of sunshine during the spring and summer. It is recommended that one brings comfortable footwear and bug spray when visiting. Additionally, the archipelago hosts various festivals throughout the year such as the Pula Film Festival at Brijuni and events at the Ulysses Theatre.

For those looking to experience the best of the Brijuni Archipelago's stunning scenery, the summer months of June through September are the most optimal time of year. During this season, visitors can expect a pleasant climate, with warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine. Additionally, sea tourism is at its peak in June, July and August, as boat tours and other activities such as swimming and snorkeling are most pleasant at this time. Also during the months of July and August, visitors can have the opportunity to partake in cultural events such as the Podium Music Festival and events at the Ulysses Theatre.

Weather in Brijuni

The weather on the Brijuni islands changes with the seasons, ranging from moderately cold to warm with a northern Mediterranean climate. The island also experiences plenty of sunlight and humidity in the summer months. The sunny season lasts from May to September when temperatures range from 68°F to 80°F (20°C to 27°C) and water temperatures are around 71°F to 84°F (22°C to 29°C). The humidity is quite high with an average of 61% in these months and there is an average 25% chance of rain. Fall and winter months bring cooler temperatures with October to April’s average air temperature ranging from 50°F to 59°F (10°C to 15°C). The most rainfall occurs in September and November, with an average 2.2 cm of rain.

Before Visiting Brijuni Archipelago

When planning a visit to the Brijuni Archipelago, it is essential to prepare items which optimize the popular outdoor activities. It is advisable to wear light layers of clothes as the humidity levels on the islands can be relatively high which in turn increases the heat. It would also be a good idea to bring bug spray to protect from various bugs. Furthermore, if one intends to explore Veliki Brijun island, it is recommended to comfortable sports shoes as the terrain can be quite rocky and there is a wide range of places to visit on foot.

Festivals & Special Days in Brijuni

The Brijuni Archipelago plays host to a few fun events and festivals throughout the course of the year, but as there are no private residents on the island, these events are limited to the preparations of the national park’s tourism team. One of them is the Pula Film Festival at Brijuni, a festival that offers visitors the opportunity to view different films under the stars at 9:30 pm every day. In addition, the archipelago is also home to the Ulysses Theatre, which hosts events and concerts in the months of July and August. These can include a selection of theatrical productions, all of which are presented by a team of skilled professionals.

The nightlife in Brijuni is of a more subdued nature. The island has a reputation for its tranquil and serene atmosphere, making it suitable for travelers seeking a peaceful environment. For those looking for nightlife activities, they may take a boat ride to nearby Fazana, Croatia where a number of bars are located. However, there is one quaint little bar on the island for those who don’t want to leave.

Neptun Restaurant is located 10 minutes away from the coast of the Fazana region by boat. The restaurant is known for its Mediterranean cuisine, but also prepares any type of dishes that customers desire. The menu includes a special dish of tatar steak, and the meals are prepared in front of the customers and tasted before presentation. Additionally, the restaurant offers a terrace option for up to 100 people, where visitors can enjoy their meal with a unique view of the Brijuni coastline and sea. The decor of Neptun Restaurant includes wooden floors and rectilinear lines, which gives visitors a very prestigious impression.
