Zadar is a city of history and tourism in Croatia, and it is located on the Adriatic Sea, in the northern part of the Dalmatian Coast. Its rich history and culture make it one of the most popular tourist attractions. History

Populated since prehistoric times, Zadar is the oldest inhabited city in Croatia and it has a story dating back 3000 years. It hosted many civilizations including Liburnians, Venetians, Romans, Byzantines, Carolingians, and Croatians and was called by various names such as Jadesa, Jadera, and Zara. The aerial attacks during World War II is one of the most significant events in Zadar’s history. The attacks lasted from November 1943 to October 1944 and 80% of the city’s buildings were destroyed by the Allied bombs. While the bombings damaged the priceless historical and cultural treasures of the city, they also laid the foundations for the Zadar that exists today. The city is especially popular for the many fine Romanesque cathedrals and Byzantine churches that survived the air raids during World War II and its well preserved Roman and Venetian ruins.

What is Zadar Famous For?

Zadar is famous for its historic sites but there are also a few beloved beaches nearby. Kolovare Beach, Borik Beach, Puntamika Beach, and Punta Bajlo Beach are some great places to visit. Besides swimming, visitors can witness the magical marine life by diving and snorkeling. The Old Town Square offers beautiful examples of architecture such as the 13th century Cathedral of St. Anastasia and St. Donat Church. The Sea Organ, an architectural object which produces musical sounds with the sea waves, and the Greeting to the Sun, a solar panel system that displays a colorful light show with the sunlight absorbed during the day, are other popular attractions of the city. Zadar has many bars and clubs for those who love dancing and partying all night long, and they are mainly located in the city’s historic center known as the People’s Square.
