Marathon

For those seeking to cool off and enjoy a refreshing swim, the superb beaches surrounding the village of Marathon are perfect, with their golden sands and ample amenities.

Located on the mesmerizing island of Aegina among the Saronic Islands off the coast of Athens, the picturesque village of Marathon offers an idyllic retreat for yachtsmen seeking a truly enchanting experience. It is less than 5 kilometers south of Aegina’s main port and is situated on the sunny southwest coast of the island. The small holiday village is known for its main industries of fishing and tourism, as well as its two bustling beaches, Marathon A and Marathon B. Nestled amidst stunning turquoise waters and surrounded by a rich tapestry of local history and culture, this charming destination is a hidden gem waiting to be explored.

Marathon, sometimes also called Marathona, is much quieter and laid-back than other seaside towns, simply because it developed around its two famous beaches and houses little other industry. The holiday village features rustic whitewashed buildings covered in brightly colored bougainvillea and offers a stunning backdrop to a day spent on its golden shores. The narrow country roads snake up the hillside, boasting panoramic views of the village’s waterfront, which is lined with quaint shops, inviting tavernas, and friendly local businesses. One would never guess that this idyllic place was once the site of the historic Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE during the Greco-Persian Wars, a chapter of history that is thoughtfully detailed at the nearby Archaeological Museum of Aegina.

Ideal Wind and Boating Conditions

Yachtsmen will be delighted to find excellent wind conditions prevail over the island of Aegina, making it an ideal spot for sailing enthusiasts. The Meltemi wind, a northerly wind, blows constantly during the summer months, making for a thrilling and adventurous sailing experience. These prevailing winds ensure an exhilarating and smooth sail for yachtsmen looking to explore the beauty of the nearby islands and the mainland.

The bay of Marathon boasts several picturesque anchorage points that provide a serene haven for yachts. However, it should be noted that this coast of the island offers little natural protection. All vessels should check the weather before choosing to anchor in the waters of the village. If travelers need a place to anchor overnight, it's recommended to head to more protected locales such as Agia Marina, located on the eastern coast of the island, or the main port to the north. Fortunately, the summer months see much milder winds than the rest of the year, so stopping over in Marathon for the day is usually quite safe.

A Tale of Two Beaches

The two beaches of Marathon are Marathon A, also called Marathon Beach or Marathona Beach, and Marathon B, which is located about 400 meters southeast of its neighbor. Both beaches are well-organized, with equipment rentals, bathroom facilities, and cafes and tavernas serving refreshments. They both have sandy shores with some stones and pebbles that get quite hot under the sun, so sea shoes are recommended. Both locations are also excellent for families with young children or weak swimmers, as the waters are shallow with a gentle decline into the sea and generally mild waves.

Both Marathon A and Marathon B tend to get quite busy in the summer months, particularly July and August. This is due to many factors, not the least of which is the pleasantly warm waters, which heat up to a delightful 74°F (23°C) in the summer and average 78°F (26°C) in August. This can be a lot of fun, but for travelers who wish to avoid the crowds, it's recommended to arrive earlier in the day or visit during the shoulder seasons. No matter when one visits, both locations provide ideal views of the sunset, which is framed by the glistening Aegean Sea and neighboring islands of Moni and Agistri, as well as the Peloponnese peninsula.

There are a few differences between the two beaches. Most importantly, Marathon B has a small quay where boats can moor, whereas vessels at Marathon A will not have that option. Additionally, Marathon A is closer to the center of town, which gives it greater access to more restaurants, shops, and so on, while Marathon B is at the edge of the village and can have a more tranquil ambiance.

Nearby Attractions and Activities

Marathon serves as an excellent base for exploring the wonders of Aegina Island. Travelers can delve into ancient history by visiting the Temple of Aphaia, an incredibly well-preserved Doric-style temple standing majestically overlooking the sea. It's also pleasant to take a stroll through the charming fishing village of Perdika, renowned for its delicious seafood restaurants and breathtaking sunsets. The island's coastline is also peppered with secluded coves and hidden beaches, accessible only by boat, offering a sense of tranquility and privacy for those seeking a unique swimming experience.

For the more adventurous, it's thrilling to hike up to the summit of Mount Oros, the highest point on Aegina, and be rewarded with magnificent panoramic views of the Saronic Gulf. Alternatively, adventurers can indulge in a leisurely bike ride through the island's stunning countryside or explore the charming villages scattered across the island.
