Antiparos Island is part of the Cyclades group in the middle of the Aegean Sea, situated 1.9 kilometers from the more well known Paros Island. History 

Once known as Oliaros during ancient times, the history of Antiparos is not well known but is believed to be linked to Paros Island, dating back to the Neolithic era. The first known inhabitants were the Phoenicians from Sidon. Oliaros got its present name of Antiparos during the 13TH century AD. when it came under Venetian rule. Its present name is believed to have evolved from Greek mythology. Antiparos was the name of one of the 50 sons of Aegyptus that were murdered by his wife, Gritomethea. During the 14th Century, the Venetians made Antiparos a part of the Naxos Duchy and built a castle in order to protect the island. Three hundred years later, in 1537, it came under Ottoman rule. Between 1770 and 1774, the island was under Russian domination. It was also among the first in the Cyclades to participate in the Greek War of Independence in 1821 and it became a Greek state in 1832.

What is Antiparos Island Famous For? 

 Antiparos Island is home to some interesting attractions. The magnificent Cave of Antiparos Island is the most popular site to visit, populated with hundreds of ancient stalactites and stalagmites. The cobblestone alleys of town lead to the central Antiparos Square, where the ancient Kastro, the castle of Antiparos, can be seen along with some ruins of ancient churches. Beautiful beaches can be found, such as Theologos Beach, Soros Beach, Agios Giorgos Beach, and Psaralyki Beach. Another popular activity is visiting the nearby islets, many of which are also controlled by the Antiparos municipality. Despotiko is easily accessible by boat from the southern port of Agios Giorgos, where visitors can see the ruins of several temples that are believed to have been built in honor of the god Apollo. Other nearby islands popular among boaters include Tsimintiri and Strongylo, but ancient ruins previously found here are now exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Paros.

Antiparos Island is home to many attractions. There are many scenic and uncrowded beaches with crystal-clear waters and golden, sandy shores including Agios Spiridonas Beach. Psaraliki Beach is popular for swimming and families, Panagia Beach is known for its serene ambiance and Faneromeni Beach is a small secluded islet with picturesque scenery popular for boat cruises. Best Time to Visit Antiparos Island

Located on the Aegean Sea, Antiparos Island is a popular holiday destination that appeals to many types of travelers. The best time to visit is during the months of April to October when the island's beautiful beaches and historic sites are most pleasant to explore. July and August are peak months and much livelier with more crowds.  Visitors can also attend many exciting events during the summer including the feast of Agios Ioannis Spiliotis, the festival of Agia Marina, and the feast day of Panagia Faneromeni. Due to the hot climate wearing sun protection and keeping hydrated are highly recommended when visiting during the hotter months. 

Antiparos Island is most popular during the summer months of April to October. April to June and September to October are quieter times with fewer crowds, when exploring attractions such as Antiparos Cave and Kastro Castle and touring Antiparos town is more enjoyable. July and August fall into the peak months when the weather is hotter, the island is busier, and many families with children tend to arrive. During the summer season, tourists can relax and soak up the sun's rays on one of the beaches or cool down in the revitalizing Aegean waters while swimming and participating in water sports. Weather in Antiparos Island 

The climate of Antiparos is typical of the Mediterranean. The summer season is warm and sunny, lasting from April until October, with average temperatures ranging from 62.6℉ (17℃) to 77℉ (25℃). The hottest and driest month is August, with temperatures reaching highs of 91.24℉ (33℃), and an average rainfall of just 1mm, with up to 13 hours of sunshine. The humidity is also a bit high, staying above 68.0% year round. The winter months are generally mild, with average temperatures of 55.4℉ (13℃) and a range of weather conditions. November and December are the wettest months, and January is the coldest month with temperatures averaging 55.58°F (13.1°C). 

Before Visiting Antiparos Island

Antiparos Island’s weather is very hot and sunny during the summer season, with the most popular activities being sailing around the coastline, swimming in the clear Aegean waters, and exploring caves. It is highly recommended to purchase a high-UV sunblock and appropriate clothing to protect the body from heat and sun. Festivals & Special Days in Antiparos Island

 Antiparos hosts events such as sporting competitions, religious feasts, and special historical days. On the 7th of May, the feast of Agios Ioannis Spiliotis takes place at the small church of Agios Ioannis, where traditional cuisine and local wines are offered to showcase the island's culture. From July 15th to 17th, the festival of Agia Marina commences at the port of Antiparos. It involves yacht racing, triathlon events, swimming, and running races on the streets of the island. On the final day, there is a ceremonial prayer of the cherished icon of Agia Marina and participating athletes are awarded prizes for their efforts. On the 7th of September, the feast day of Panagia Faneromeni is held, with food, wine, and dancing, and guests have to arrive by boat. Other festivals include the Summer Festival which lasts for three days and Bonfire Night celebrations where garlands are set alight to great a large bonfire.

 Antiparos Island has a laid-back yet charming nightlife, including small, quiet bars and one thriving nightclub. Many of the entertainment destinations are in the center of Antiparos town, within Chora Square. Most of the establishments have indoor and outdoor areas, with some providing a quiet and relaxing atmosphere and others with a livelier and more crowded feel. The range of venues provides the perfect areas to sit and admire the exquisite historical architecture or dance the night away underneath the stars. 

- Boogaloo Cocktail Bar

The popular Boogaloo Cocktail Bar has been a hotspot in the town of Antiparos since 2008 and has become popular among locals and tourists. It has a lively and social atmosphere with an indoor and outdoor seating area. Situated in an authentic Greek taverna, there are various works of art dedicated to famous singers. Zombos is located in the heart of the Cyclades, in the small village of Agios Georgios within the island of Antiparos. It is run by the Patelis family whose passion is to create traditional Greek dishes with authenticity and quality. They use the freshest ingredients possible, including vegetables from their own gardens, meat from their farm, and locally caught fish to create well presented dishes. Moussaka, slow cooked goat, a variety of prime meat cuts, and grilled fish are firm favorites at this friendly resturant. 

- Yam

Yam is in the center of the island within Chora. The charming restaurant is situated in a vibrant and neat garden area with a wooden deck surrounded by pink and purple pergolas. It has a pleasant and well-organized outdoor terrace with romantic lighting overhead, crisp white furnishings, and a comfortable sofa area that can be enjoyed with friends. It offers gourmet Greek dishes infused with an Eastern touch. Guest favorites include teriyaki chicken, mozzarella balls, and beef tagliatelle. Kalokeri is located on Pedestrian Street in Antiparos Town. The fine-dining restaurant offers traditional and refined Aegean dishes with a signature touch. Lollo's Pizzeria is a classic Italian restaurant in the town of Antiparos, situated on the waterfront with magnificent views of the harbor.
