Popular Yacht Charter
Situated just south of the picturesque island of Sifnos in the Aegean Sea, Kitriani Island offers a breathtaking escape for yachtsmen seeking tranquility, natural beauty, and a glimpse into history. It is located about 350 meters from the coast of its bustling neighbor to the north, yet it is completely uninhabited. With an area of less than 1 km, it is easy to explore in half a day while enjoying Sifnos and its other Cycladic neighbors. The steep rocky shores, while lacking in beaches, provide tranquil bays for protected anchorage and swimming. Additionally, the islet is known for Panagia Kitriani, a historic Greek Orthodox church of breathtaking beauty.
The moment travelers set foot on Kitriani Island, they are enveloped by a sense of peace and serenity. The island's untouched natural beauty, coupled with its sparkling blue waters and rugged coastline, creates an ambiance that is both captivating and rejuvenating. As visitors explore the island, they'll be greeted by breathtaking vistas, with panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, neighboring islands, and the dazzling cliffs that line the coastline.
Historical Significance
Kitriani Island holds a small yet locally significant place in Greek history and culture. Its name is derived from the church of Panagia Kitriani, a distinctive white-washed building perched atop the island's northwestern hills. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, this ancient structure dates back to the Byzantine era, with some believing it was built as early as the 11th century. The exquisite architecture and religious relics housed within the building provide a fascinating glimpse into the island's past, weaving together a tapestry of spirituality and heritage.
Water, Anchorage, and Wind Conditions
Kitriani Island boasts crystal-clear waters, inviting yachtsmen to indulge in a variety of aquatic activities. Anchorage options can be found along the island's coastline, offering tranquil settings for daytime visits. The western side of the island, near the harbor of Platis Gialos on Sifnos, provides a safe and serene anchorage point. However, the eastern side of the island is more exposed and should be visited only when the winds permit. Additionally, there are no facilities or services on the island, so visitors are advised to come prepared. The closest ports are Platis Gialos and Vathi.
Wind conditions around Kitriani Island are generally pleasant, with the Meltemi wind providing consistent sailing opportunities during the summer. This gentle, northerly wind is ideal for both experienced and novice sailors, allowing for smooth navigation and enjoyable voyages around the area. However, the waters in many of the bays are a bit rocky and shallow, so boats should take care not to run aground.
The most popular anchorage point is the small cove at the foot of the hills near Panagia Kitriani. There is no jetty, but the calm, deep waters are relatively safe for vessels while guests take the short hike up to the church. Even this beloved point is almost never busy, but there is a higher likelihood of crowds during the peak tourism months of July and August. Otherwise, the islet is almost always deserted.
Exploring Kitriani Island and Surroundings
Apart from the inherent tranquility found on Kitriani Island, there are several fascinating activities and bays to discover nearby. Most importantly, a visit to the Panagia Kitriani monastery is a must, allowing guests to witness stunning religious artifacts and marvel at the mesmerizing views surrounding it. It is the only building that exists on the island and is believed to be the oldest ecclesiastical monument of Sifnos. The photogenic whitewashed building features a cruciform design with a dome, characteristic of the middle Byzantine period and perfect for taking photos.
For those seeking a secluded swim, the islet boasts a number of remote bays where they can drop anchor and spend some time alone with nature. The shore rises steeply from the water, so there are no beaches to speak of, yet the impressive rock formations make a stunning backdrop to a day of swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking. From late June to early October, the water temperature is typically above 73°F (23°C).
Kitriani is also widely known for its excellent fishing waters, which are famous for both the variety and quantity of fish. However, guests should supply their own equipment or find a rental service on Sifnos Island. Some of the creatures one might find include red mullet, sea bream, grouper, and many more.
