Red Beach

The Red Beach, also known as Kokkini Paralia, is a stunning and unique beach located on the southern coast of the Greek island of Santorini, near the village of Akrotiri. The beach is surrounded by towering red cliffs, which provide natural shade and stunning views of the Aegean Sea. The beach gets its red color from a mix of volcanic rocks and sedimentary layers. The volcanic activity in the area also contributes to the formation of black and white volcanic pebbles scattered along the beach. The combination of red sand and black and white pebbles makes for a truly picturesque scene.

Visiting the Red Beach

The remarkable feature that sets Red Beach apart is its striking red sand and cliffs, creating a stark contrast against the vivid blue waters of the Aegean Sea. It is also a nudist friendly locale. The clear waters around the beach make it an excellent spot for snorkeling, allowing visitors to see marine life including colorful fish and sea turtles. The weather conditions are generally warm and sunny during the summer months, making it an ideal destination for sunbathing, swimming, and outdoor activities. The average water temperature during the summer season from June to September ranges from 72.1°F (22.3°C) to 75.0°F (23.9°C), with occasional peak temperatures on the water reaching up to 76.4°F (25.3°C). For those who enjoy going ashore, there are hiking trails leading up to the nearby hills offering breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and surrounding landscape. There are no facilities nearby, so visitors should arrive prepared.

Red Beach is only accessible by boats, or by a hiking trail near Matala. The water near the shore is relatively shallow and suitable for swimming, making it a popular spot for families with children. Boats should take note to drop anchor beyond the swimming area. It is a safe anchorage in all but southern winds, though the area is always somewhat wavy.
