Breathtaking Ionian Islands and Authentic Greek Villages

Palairos, once known as Zaverda until 1928, is a charming town famous for its beaches, archaeological sites, sporting activities, and architecture. It was once a city of ancient Greece, situated on the southern side of the region of Epirus and is believed to have existed since the Mycenaean period. Today it lies high up in the mountains, overlooking the magnificent Ionian Sea and wonderful Lake Vourkaria. Tour members can enjoy a leisurely walk along the area's shoreline, along with authentic taverns and cafes, before setting sail. Our tour will depart at 4:00 p.m. from Palairos. Its geographical position and close proximity to popular destinations provide the perfect starting point for our adventure ahead.

Today's journey will lead us from Palairos to Kastos. Kastos is one of the lesser-known Ionian Islands; however, this small destination is perfect for a relaxing and harmonious day. There are approximately 100 permanent residents on this 5-kilometer-squared island; most are native to this area and have lived here most of their lives. With very limited means of transport, the best way to explore is on foot. The sea waters surrounding the island are clean, clear, and a paradise for swimmers, snorkelers, scuba divers, fishing enthusiasts, and sailors. The west side of the island, known as Sarakiniko, has a rocky coastline. The eastern side, known as Kastos village, is home to several small pebbled beaches and secluded bay areas such as Limni, Babakia, Vrisidia, Fiki, and Aitiki. During the summer months, this island is a hotspot for sailors who are traveling through the Ionian Sea. Although there are limited amenities, tour members can find a tavern, a mini market, and an abundance of natural beauty. When visiting this island, an important thing to consider is that it is a cash-only location; credit or debit cards are not accepted.

Today's tour will guide us from Kastos to Ithaka Island. Ithaca Island is world-famous for being the home of Odysseus. This iconic island is surrounded by thriving Mediterranean greenery, charming villages, and magnificent beaches. On the island, there are several relaxing yet popular beaches to enjoy, such as Filiatro, Sarakiniko, and Agios Ioannis, and more secluded locations to discover, including Gidaki Beach. Along with the villages and beaches, some other popular attractions include Loizos Cave and Katharon Monastery. While exploring Ithaca, tour members will have the opportunity to visit the picturesque village of Frikes, which is situated on the eastern side of the island. This port area lies deep in the bay, providing good shelter from strong winds. Small white houses line the hills, providing fantastic views, along with a traditional windmill. Here, tour members can find taverns, shops, cafes, restaurants, and an outdoor nightclub.

On today's journey, we will sail from Ithaka Island to Kefalonia Island. Kefalonia Island is referred to by many as the jewel of the Ionian Sea. Well known due to its presence in the movie Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, as well as being one of the most photographed places in Greece. It is also the largest in the Ionian Sea, showcasing a spectacular landscape and exotic beaches. Tour members can explore this postcard-worthy area by visiting magical caves, admiring the wonderful mountains, indulging in local cuisine, exploring historical sites, and visiting authentic Greek villages. The island's spectacular beaches, such as Myrtos, Antisamos, Lourdas, and Skala, are sure to make visitors fall in love with this destination. Our day will conclude by visiting Fiskardo. A unique car-free fishing village, surrounded by thriving cypresses and olive trees. The village has its own port and marina, where many taverns, bars, and shops can be found. Although this area has a cosmopolitan vibe, there are some interesting historical sites to visit, such as the Venetian Lighthouse, the Roman Cemetery, and the Nautical and Environmental Museum, where the skeletons of several marine mammals can be seen. As for its beaches, the most popular include Foki and Emplisi. Foki Beach is situated in a small cove enclosed by thriving greenery, pebbled textures, and deep blue waters. Emplisi Beach has a more tranquil atmosphere due to its secluded location. The beach is made up of rocks and white pebbles with lots of natural shade and pristine waters that are perfect for snorkeling.

Today's adventure will guide us from Kefalonia Island to Meganisi Island. Meganisi Island is surrounded by thriving Mediterranean greenery and crystal-clear waters. The best way to explore this isolated location is on foot, as there are no public transportation facilities. Although there isn't much in terms of sightseeing or big attractions, there are several wonderful chapels and an abundance of nature to admire. As for its beaches, there are several that can be found, such as Agios Ioannis, Spilia, Barbarezou, and Fanari, along with many secret coves. Tour members will also have the opportunity to visit the main village of Spartochori, on the northern side of the island. Within this colorful and authentic village, tour participants can discover whitewashed houses, courtyards filled with potted plants, breathtaking panoramic views and a tavern offering local cuisine and freshly caught fish.

While exploring all that Meganisi Island has to offer, we will visit the village of Vathi. Located on the northeast coast, it is one of the main villages on the island, showcasing whitewashed houses, narrow alleys, a few churches, taverns, and restaurants. Due to the lack of mass toırism, most of the village's economy is based around agricultural activities such as olive production, livestock farming, and fishing. The most fascinating natural treasure here is the Papanikolis sea cave, which is believed to have been a secret hideaway for the submarine Papanikolis during World War II. It is the second-largest cave in Greece, partially flooded by the sea, and used by many ships for shelter and protection during bad weather conditions.

Today's tour will take us from Meganisi Island to Abelike Bay. Abelike Bay lies on the northeastern side of Meganissi and is most definitely one of the most beautiful hidden treasures within Greece. Here, tour members can enjoy a day of complete relaxation away from the more livelier villages that we have previously visited. The bay is completely unspoiled, with only two taverns and a peaceful and calm atmosphere. Although there are no sightseeing attractions or tourist amenities, this area is a paradise for swimmers, snorkelers, and nature lovers. The untouched oasis is the perfect location for the last heavenly evening, under the stars, before returning back to the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

On the final day of the tour, we will sail from Abelike Bay to Palairos. Tour participants can explore Palairos in more detail, partake in several different activities, and explore many historical sites. If you're looking for a relaxing day, there are many spectacular beaches to visit, including Vathiavali, Palairos Beach, Agios Ioannis, and Varko. For our history lovers, the most popular and preserved sites include the castle of Kechropoula, the Venetian castle of Plagia, the manor house of Rangos, and the monastery of the holy Agios Dimitrios, to name a few. For those wishing to partake in sporting activities, hiking, cycling, diving, and windsurfing are some of the activities on offer.
