Sami

Prepare to embark on an odyssey of the senses that will leave you with cherished memories that last a lifetime while sailing the calm seas of Sami in the Ionian Sea.

The captivating town of Sami rests on the central east coast of the magnificent Cephalonia Island, also called Kefalonia Island. Nestled in the mesmerizing Ionian Sea, Sami provides an idyllic setting for sailors seeking a true nautical adventure. This beautiful coastal town has a population of only 1000 inhabitants, most of whom are farmers and fishermen. The town also hosts one of the island's main ports, which receives ferries from Patra, Astakos, Ithaca, and Italy. Though the port gets busy, the town itself is quiet and peaceful.

Sami exudes an ineffable charm that captivates all who dock their vessels here. Known for its authentic Greek ambiance, the town embraces its rich history and remains blissfully untouched by mass tourism. The warm and hospitable locals welcome sailors with open arms, ensuring a memorable and enjoyable stay. From the delightful waterfront promenade lined with tavernas and cafes to the picturesque streets adorned with vibrant flowers, Sami creates an atmosphere that dazzles the senses and uplifts the soul.

Mythology and Inland Treasures

Visitors to Sami can become immersed in the captivating tapestry of local mythology while enjoying the enchanting vibes of the town. According to legends, the island of Cephalonia was the home of Odysseus, the hero of Homer's epic poem "The Odyssey." Mythology aficionados can explore the archaeological site of ancient Sami, where remnants of the ancient Acropolis and Roman period can be found. Here, guests can imagine navigating the same waters as the courageous heroes of old, and let the tales of the past ignite a sense of adventure.

There are a few other interesting sites located inland for those who like to explore. The Drogarati Cave was discovered 300 years ago and features remarkable formations of stalactites and stalagmites that can be explored on foot. There is also a historic monastery on top of a hill which overlooks the town and boasts stunning views of the sea.

Wind and Water Conditions

Sami offers an ideal sailing experience due to its favorable wind and water conditions. Situated in the sheltered bay of Sami, the surrounding mountains create a natural barrier against strong winds, allowing for serene and peaceful sailing throughout most of the year. The calmest time of year lasts for about 7 months, from April to October, and the calmest month is June, with an average hourly wind speed of 8 miles per hour.

The crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea provide the perfect playground for aspiring and seasoned sailors alike, inviting them to explore the nearby treasures and bask in the serenity of this Mediterranean paradise. It is also known for pleasant swimming and snorkeling with its warm waters throughout the summer. The time of year with the warmest water lasts from July to October, with an average temperature above 74°F (23°C). The month with the warmest water is August, with an average temperature of 78°F (26°C).

Bays, Beaches, and More

Sami is a small port town with only a few beaches, but its small collection of natural wonders offer their own unique charms. For instance, Melissani Cave, situated just a short distance from the town, showcases a stunning underground lake with azure waters where guests can explore by dinghy. When the sun is directly overhead at noon, the sunshine hitting the turquoise waters creates a wonderful illusion that lights the entire cave with blue light.

Just beside the main port is Sami Beach, also called Loutro Beach, which is about 500 meters long, but is quite narrow and rocky. The sea here is calm and shallow, but vessels have to remain docked at the port. A bit more spectacular is the nearby Antisamos Beach which beckons visitors with its dazzling white pebbles and dazzling turquoise sea that have appeared in films. This bay is easy to anchor in, though it can get crowded in the peak season.

For those who explore the local bays and beaches, it's important to note that sea shoes are needed as most shores are rocky. Additionally, though the town is quiet and laid-back, there is an uptick in tourism from July to August, when the crowds at the popular beaches can be unpredictable.
