Korcula Island in the Adriatic Sea is a shining beacon among tourist destinations for its superb bays and beaches as well as rich historic and cultural treasures to explore.

Korcula is an island of the Dalmatian archipelago located in Croatia’s Adriatic Sea. A much loved destination for cruises and boat trips, it is known for its many island villages, warm beaches, dense pine forests, vineyards, and historic landmarks. Some of the most popular sites here include Korcula’s Old Town, Pupnatska Luka, and the St. Nicholas Church in Racisce. There are a number of marinas on the island as well as secluded bays to anchor at, before enjoying the warm waters and exploring inland. 

History

The first settlers on Korcula were those of the Mesolithic and Neolithic ages, and archeological evidence of their lives were found on the sites of Vela Spila and Jakas Cave both of which can be visited today. Illyrians arrived around 1000 BC, and for many centuries, they lived alongside the ancient Cnidians until the Romans took over in 219 BC. During Byzantine rule in the 6th century, the area saw the fall of the Roman Empire. Over the coming centuries Korcula was invaded by many empires due to its strategic importance in the Adriatic Sea. In 1945, Korcula became part of today’s People's Republic of Croatia. Over the course of its dynamic history, the island has gained a wealth of prominent sites that are visited by many such as St. Mark's Cathedral, the Korcula Town Walls, and the Franciscan Monastery.

What is Korcula Famous For?

Korcula’s most popular activities are centered around its extensive coastline and the quaint settlements dotted along the island. It is home to incredible beaches such as Pupnatska Luka, Brna Bay, Zavalatica Bay, and Zrnovo Bay, as well as numerous unnamed inlets and coves along the coastline, perfect for those wanting to explore the waters of the Adriatic. There are a number of small towns such as Pupnat, where visitors can find well preserved architecture dating back centuries. Korcula Town is the largest settlement, and like a miniature Dubrovnik, visitors can explore the walled Old Town including St. Mark’s Church and St. Anthony’s Hill. Racisce in the north, is an old fisherman's village established in the 17th century, where travelers can visit St. Nicholas Church. Vela Luka has a range of small cafes and restaurants and neighbors the famous mud baths in Prozid, whilst Zavalatica Bay is a beautiful beach that hosts a number of restaurants and is near the best wineries on the island. 

Places to Visit in Korcula

Korcula is one of the main Croatia islands in the Dalmatian archipelago found in the Adriatic Sea. The island has some of the clearest waters in the world, stunning beaches, and historic treasures. There are 12 settlements on the island in total, most of which are coastal villages, some of the main ones being Korcula Old Town, Vela Luka, Zrnovo, and Lumbarda. The Old Town is where most of the historical monuments can be found such as St. Mark’s Church, Marco Polo’s Home, and the fortified tower of Kanavelic. Turquoise beaches and inlets can be found along the coast including Brna Bay, Pupnatska Luka, Zrnovo Bay, and Zavalatica Bay. On these beaches, activities from kayaking to snorkeling and various other water sports are popular with visitors. 

The island of Korcula offers more than just beaches and coastal activities. Once docked at ACI Marina or Lucica Lumbarda, visitors can freely travel the island on foot, by bike, or by car. One of the main attractions here is St. Anthony’s Hill in the settlement of Lumbarda, where visitors can climb up the 102 steps that lead to the top boasting striking views of the surrounding area. Below the hill, a small chapel dedicated to St. Anthony can be found. The island has numerous vineyards, and wine tasting and visiting boutique vineyards is a popular activity. Many of the restaurants found here are dedicated to showcasing local food and drink, and so these wines in particular are served in many of the fine dining spots dotted around Korcula. 

Best Time to Visit Korcula

Korcula is a much loved island located in the southern Adriatic Sea and is well known for its warm Mediterranean climate. Home to stunning beaches, secluded bays, hiking trails, and festivals, it is a popular summer destination for tourists all over the world. Korcula experiences almost half a year of warm weather between May and September making it a prime destination for boating, festivals, hiking, and sightseeing. Whilst doing so visitors must be sure to prepare accordingly, packing heat resistant clothing and supplies. Those that visit during the summer months can catch some of the local festivals such as the Boat Race Kneze and the Korkyralis Summer Festival. 

The best time to visit Korcula is during the summer months when the bays and beaches surrounding the island are warm. The long warm season spans from May to September, and is relatively long, making the island a popular spot for tourists and boaters. July and August are the busiest months due to the hot weather, and so visitors can expect the most crowds in particular on the many beaches that the island has to offer. For sightseeing, hiking, visiting vineyards, and other local activities, May and September are perfect times to visit as it is not as hot and there are significantly less crowds. 

Weather in Korcula

Korcula is one of the many islands in the Adriatic Sea and its weather conditions are typical of the northern Mediterranean. The summer season is relatively long starting in May and ending in September. The month of May is when the waters start to warm up and the average high in air temperature is 71.7°F (22°C) whilst September reaches highs of 75.2°F (24°C). The warmest month is July with average highs of 76°F (30°C). In June, the days are longest with up to 15 hours of sunlight. Although Korcula has generally dry weather conditions, it can sometimes experience muggy days. August has the highest humidity levels with an average of 7 muggy days of around 25% humidity. July is also the driest month of the year, whilst December averages 86 mm of rainfall making it the wettest month. The winters can be cold, wet and windy, lasting from November to March. January is the coldest month with average lows of 43°F (6°C). 

Before Visiting Korcula

Korcula is a much loved tourist hotspot visited for its seaside activities, sightseeing, boating, hiking, and exploring the small towns. Visitors are advised to bring appropriate clothing depending on the type of activity that they plan to take part in. Boaters and those that want to enjoy the many beaches should bring beachwear as well as sea shoes as much of the coast is rocky or pebbled. Suncream is also a must, particularly during the hottest months. For more inland activities such as sightseeing and hiking, comfortable footwear, a hat, and clothing to keep the body cool may be required. 

Festivals & Special Days in Korcula

There are a range of cultural, historical, and religious events that take place in Korcula throughout the year. Visitors can find the weekly Moreska Sword Dance, which takes place in the Old Town and is both a local type of dance and a theatrical drama that originated in Spain during the 12th century before being adopted by the island in the 16th century. In April the annual Marco Polo Challenge takes place. It is a sporting event which hosts triathlon races named after the world famous merchant, traveler, and writer who was born and raised on the island. Another sporting festival that takes place in June is Boat Race Kneze, an annual towing race that starts from the Neretva River and finishes in Korcula Town. The Korkyralis Summer Festival is the main cultural and music festival that spans for a month from July 25th to August 29th and hosts some of the world's leading electronic music DJ’s. The stages are set in the open air, on boats, and among the beautiful natural settings of Korcula. 

Nightlife in Korcula

Predominantly located central to Korcula town, many of the nightlife spots in Korcula center around showcasing the fantastic ranges of wines and local products that can be found made all over the island. Whether it be wine tasting in a laid back setting or clubbing at one of the island's most visited clubs, the nightlife here offers something for all. 

- Wine Bar Roco

Located on the most northern point of Korcula, just steps away from St. Mark's Cathedral, Wine Bar Roco is one the most charming spots in the Old Town. Set in a beautiful cobbled street beside the medieval Kanavelic Tower, this bar is sure to captivate guests. Guests can choose to be seated inside the historic stone building, or outside on the narrow alley that has been decorated with hanging lights. On occasion the venue hosts live music nights. It is a popular point for wine enthusiasts due to its ample range. Along with its wonderful selection of wines, they serve a range of snacks and charcuterie boards consisting of cured meats, local cheeses, fruits, and crackers.

- Bokar Wine Bar

A much-loved wine bar, Bokar Wine Bar is situated central to the main attractions in Korcula. Close to the waterfront and surrounded by the town’s most prominent historical sites, this bar welcomes guests looking for an atmospheric evening. Visitors can sit along the narrow cobbled alley with steps that lead down onto the promenade with beautiful sea views. Although known for its specially selected wines, they also serve craft beers and have an organic food menu. Guests can find delicacies such as cured meats, a range of cheeses, homemade condiments, seafood, and pickles, to compliment their drinks. 

- BARic

Set along the seafront boasting evening sunsets views over the sea, BARic is one of Korcula’s best nightlife spots. Not only does it serve great local wines from the vineyards on the island, but guests can find carefully mixed house cocktails and a selection of beers as well as a food menu. This elegantly designed bar gives guests the choice to be seated indoors or outdoors, where the views of the surrounding area are stunning. 

- G&T Club Lounge Bar

This bar is part of Hotel Korcula de la Ville and is a great addition to the area's nightlife scene. This elegant lounge bar is decorated in a sleek manner, perfect for evening dinners alongside some drinks. There is both indoor and outdoor seating, with the back garden decorated with cast iron, nouveau-style tables and chairs. The bar has a great selection of drinks, and there is a fully functioning kitchen that serves food. 

- Cocktail Bar Massimo

Boasting some of the best views in town, this bar is set inn a 15th century fortress rooftop just moments away from the Old Town's most visited landmarks. Although guests will need to climb some stairs and a ladder to reach the top, the panoramic views are worth it. The fully stocked bar offers a range of drinks for everyone and the bar staff are trained to mix perfect cocktails every time. 

- The Jungle Club

Known to be one of the most popular clubs within the area, The Jungle Club is an energetic open-air nightclub, playing the best international EDM and club classics. It is located on the southern end of Korcula town and looks out onto forest and sea views. Once it gets dark, the club is lit up with neon lights until the early hours of the morning. Guests can expect DJ sets, a wide variety of drinks, and a mixed crowd welcoming to all. 

Luxury / Fine Dining Restaurants in Korcula

Korcula is home to a sophisticated restaurant scene which combines Croatian and Mediterranean delicacies and particularly emphasizes seafood. The best eateries are found in the old town of Korcula, located close to the island's main tourist attractions, however more hidden gems can be found dotted all over the island. Whether it be meat dishes, grilled fish, or charcuterie boards, there is something here for everyone and for every occasion. 

- De Canavellis

For travelers looking for fine dining and Dalmatian classics adapted with a modern twist, De Canavellis is one of Korcula town’s most luxurious restaurants. It is located on the northernmost point of the seafront town and surrounded by the area's most prominent historical monuments such as Kanavelic Tower. The restaurant offers a choice of their sleek, sophisticated interior or the breathtaking rooftop which has panoramic views of the surrounding area and the sea ahead. Adding to the warm ambiance, guests will enjoy their meal with the addition of live music. Specializing in local seafood classics such as black cuttlefish risotto and shrimp carpaccio, guests can compliment their meal with a drink from the fully stocked bar. 

- Konoba Adio Mare

Konoba Adio Mare is an award-winning local hotspot that emphasizes the importance of the island's gastronomical heritage, and believes the key to delicious food is local, seasonal, and fresh produce. They attain all fish from the local fishmongers and grow their own fresh produce. It is worth noting that Adio Mare is a family run business and is only open during the summer season. There is an outdoor terrace where guests can choose to be seated with one of the most spectacular views of the town where monuments such as St. Peter's Church, Marco Polo’s house, and St. Mark's Cathedral can be seen. The menu is selective, however every dish is made to perfection such as the charcoal-grilled spiny lobster and scampi bouzzara. The alcohol menu is extensive, and the wine served here is sourced from Korcula or the surrounding islands making this spot truly authentic. 

- Restoran Radiona

Located along the Setaliste Frana Krsinica promenade just steps away from Korcula town's main harbor, Restoran Radiona serves a blend of Dalmatian and  Mediterranean dishes. The restaurant is set in a stone building with an outdoor seating area by the water overlooking the marina, and is a perfect spot for a delicious lunch or indulgent evening meal. Specializing in seafood and meat dishes, guests can choose from a range of mouthwatering gourmet options including gnocchi with wild boar and tuna tartare. 

- Restaurant Nigra Korcula

Launched in 2019, Nigra focuses on creating flavourful dishes using organic, fresh, and local produce. It is located centrally along Put Svetog Nikole street where it has its own decked terrace right beside the waterfront. The menu is small but all dishes are beautifully prepared using the best possible ingredients by trained chefs. Guests can choose from local classics with modern twists such as the hand-rolled pasta  known as makaruni with Dalmatian salsa and beef steak served with vegetable terrine and plum sauce. Like the food, all wines paired with selected dishes are also local, and guests can indulge in some of the best wines made on the island. 

- Lole Wine and Tapas Bar

Situated just up the road from St. Mark's Church, Lole Wine and Tapas Bar is a relaxed, cozy eatery aiming to serve delicacies from the Dalmatian. Serving tapas style food platters in a traditional stone building, guests can choose to sit along the narrow street that looks down towards the sea, or inside where the decor is rustic and inviting with subtle details like crocheted table wear. Guests can expect delicious cured and smoked meats, many different types of cheese, a mix of mouthwatering condiments, and a great selection of wines including floral and fruity orange wines which are a favorite here. 

- Pensatore Kitchen & Wine

Set within a beautifully revamped historic stone building, Pensatore is one of the beloved restaurants in the town of Korcula. Located beside the picturesque waterfront moments away from Church of All Saints, this restaurant is as easily accessible and has lovely views. It has a sleek and elegant interior, however guests usually choose to sit in its outdoor seating area which looks down to the warm waters of the Adriatic. Specializing in a mix of Croatian and Mediterranean favorites, guests can choose from freshly prepared dishes such as homemade pasta with pesto and goats cheese and freshly caught grilled fish. The bar here is stocked with a range of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, whilst the bar staff are happy to prepare a beautifully balanced cocktail to complement guests' meals. 

- Konoba Belin

For those looking for authentic, delicious food in a warm, inviting setting, Konoba Belin is an award-winning eatery located south of Korcula town in the village of Prvo Selo. Away from the hustle and bustle of the main town, this restaurant offers guests tranquility, incredible views of the lush green surroundings, and wonderful food. Set in a quaint, cottage-like stone building complete with stone paved floors, an open charcoal grill, and wood burning oven, visitors will feel like they are at home at this incredibly charming eatery. Serving local and Mediterranean food, they specialize in grilled seafood and fine cuts of meat. 

- MD Tasting House

A hidden gem located on the shores of Racisce Bay, the cozy yet sophisticated MD Tasting House is one not to miss when in the area. Set in a two storey stone build looking out onto the sea, this eatery is sure to charm those that visit. Specializing in sharing platters, charcuterie boards, and great local wines, it is a perfect spot for a romantic meal watching the sunset over the sea or group gatherings after a day of bay hopping.
