Omis

A beloved destination for boaters and yachters, Omis is a small port town in the Dalmatia region of Croatia, located where the Cetina River meets the Adriatic Sea. The town’s main income is from nautical tourism as well as farming, fishing, and textile industries. It is a popular destination with its many water activities like windsurfing and kayaking thanks to its location in the mouth of the river.  The best times to visit the town are from early May to early October, when the beaches of Omis are perfect for swimming and boating. History

Omis was home to pirates in the 14th century who used very fast boats to catch trade ships. Those were the most feared pirates of Venice and Dubrovnik, which were famous trade destinations of the time. They used the Cetina River to escape their enemies and the Mirabella Fortress and Starigrad Fortress to hide and watch the sea. The fortresses can still be visited today. Later, the Venetian Empire took over Dalmatia except for Omis in 1420, and the pirates were left vulnerable since their city was surrounded by one of the most powerful enemies of the time. After resisting for 24 years, the Venetians took over Omis, which is also the day when the pirates were completely destroyed. The city was later ruled by the Austrians, the French, and the Yugoslavians respectively, until 1991 when Croatia declared its independence. There are many historic churches from different eras including the 6th century Baroque Church, the Church of St. Euphemia, the Church of St. Michael with its huge bell tower, the Franciscan Monastery from the 18th century, and the Renaissance Church of the Holy Spirit.

The warm season lasts from June to early September, with an average of 80°F (26°C) and can rise up to 86.4°F (30°C) during the hottest days. Occasional rain can be seen during the summer months. Spring and fall experience the mildest days with an average of 66°F (18.9°C) and occasional rain, and a rise in flowering activity occurs. The winter months on the other hand are fairly cold with a daily average of 49°F (9.4°C). These months also experience the rainiest days, especially in November when the rain probability is 33%. The humidity level does not change throughout the year, staying within %2.

The Klapa Festival, meaning a cappella singing, has been occurring in the churches and the squares in the old town since 1967 every July. The Pirate Battle is another exciting event occurring in August every year, and it is a tribute to Omis’s history with pirates.
