Angistri Island is an isle located in the Saronic Gulf of Greece. Also called, Agistri meaning ‘hook’ in Greek, is said to have earned its name from the earlier settlers who were captured by its beauty and therefore ‘hooked’, staying permanently on the island . It has a small resident population and is composed of three settlements. Located in the northeast, Skala is the main tourism hub of the island with many hotels and resorts available. Milos also known as Megalochori is located in the north and is home to the main Greek population within the island. Limenaria is also located in the south of the island and is characterized by a large domed church dedicated to Agia Kyriaki. The island has a natural landscape rich in flora and fauna with the center predominantly covered in pine. Plants such as wild cyclamen, thyme, caper bushes, and thistles also form part of its natural landscape. The coastline is endowed with appealing pristine beaches and bays with clear waters.

Visiting the Waters of Angistri Island

Angistri Island is a quiet location with calm waters and has many natural harbors that provide safe haven. The warm, clean waters and variety of aquatic life also make for great swimming, and snorkeling experiences. Many beaches such as Skilomango West, Megali Bali, Agistri West, Dragonera Beach and Mariza Beach North are family-friendly with facilities such as taverns and restaurants.

Temperatures are generally high especially in summer between May and October when the island is the most crowded. The warmest month is July with average water temperatures of 75°F (24°C) In terms of mooring and anchoring, the most popular places include Skilomango West, Megali Bali, Agistri West, Dragonera Beach and Mariza Beach North. The average depth for the main anchoring areas range between 7 and 8 meters with sandy seabeds.

There are many beautiful bays and beaches on Angistri Island. Skala Beach is the most easily accessible and the most suitable for families. Halkiada Beach is famous for being a nudist beach. Skliri Beach is a pebbly locale and is slightly more remote, therefore a great place to enjoy some quiet time. Dragonera Beach is a rocky beach and most suitable for sunset swims because of its location in the west of the island. Mariza Beach is more of a rocky area than a beach and the is a favored place for snorkeling.
