Kumluca

Kumluca is a well loved holiday town in the district of Antalya, set on the Mediterranean Riviera coast. Formerly named the village of Sarikavak when it was founded in 1830, the area is surrounded by mountains on three sides giving Kumluca its unique beauty. It is known for its incredible beaches, secluded bays, the historic ruins of Olympos, and nearby smaller villages like Korydalla, Kitanaura, and Rhodiapolis. In town, there are a number of cafes, bars, pubs and restaurants where visitors can experience a great meal, or enjoy the lively nightlife.

History

Kumluca has a rich history, with 53 kilometers of its area running through the Lycian Way. The earliest remains found in the area is a shipwreck that dates as far back as the 16th century BC, close to the Kumluca coast. This is the same coast where the Gelidonya and Uluburun shipwrecks were found which are believed to be from the 14th century BC. The area was originally part of the Lycian Kingdom, and ancient cities such as Rhodiapolis, Corydella, Idebessiois, and Gagae are all part of the Kumluca district. The most prominent of these cities however is Olympos, which is believed to have been founded in the late Hellenistic period and attracts a great number of tourists annually. Popular monuments found at the site include the Sarcophagus of captain Eudemos, the Olympos theater, the Necropolis, and the Acropolis hill. After the fall of the Lycians in 655 AD due to a great sea battle that took place, the area saw a decline in population which is believed to be because of a number of raids that took place shortly after. Kumluca saw many civilizations which included the Persians, Byzantines, and Ottomans. Much of the population had dissolved by the 15th century. When the Ottomans lost their power and Turkey became a republic, the area was part of the Greek-Turkish population exchange, which once again shaped the demographics.

What is Kumluca Famous For?

Kumluca’s most popular activities revolve around its incredible coastline. Mavikent Beach, Sazak Bay, Andrea Doria Bay, and Kumluca Beach are all popular spots made up of the many inlets and secluded coves found along the coast, which attract Blue Cruise boats as well as visitors on land. The area is mountainous, surrounded by the Taurus mountains, making for spectacular views. The main part of town along the coast is host to a number of restaurants, cafes and bars some of which are active during the evenings, making it a lively hub for nightlife with sea views. Boats can dock along the many coves and inlets or at Papaz Pier, before exploring the surroundings, Lycian Way route, and ancient cities. The most prominent of these cities is Olympos, situated a short distance away from the town center. At the old ruins, visitors can witness one of the most influential cities in the Lycian civilization, with monuments such as dwellings, churches, the Olympos Amphitheatre, the Sarcophagus of Captain Eudemos, and the Acropolis which has incredible views, to name a few. In addition to Olympos, smaller scale cities such as Gagae, Rhodiapolis, Corydella, and Idebessiois are also within visiting distance for those that are interested.

Places to Visit in Kumluca (Olympos)

Part of the Turkish Riviera, Kumluca is a town on the Mediterranean coast in the province of Antalya. This beautiful area offers Blue Cruises to pristine places like Sazak Bay and Ceneviz Bay. There are also ruins of ancient cities like Corydella and Idebessos. Above all, the Kumluca area is famous for the ancient city of Olympos on the Lycian Way, about 26 kilometers from the city proper, on the border of the Olympos Beydaglari National Park. There are many things to do in Olympos, from exploring the city ruins to paragliding or mountain climbing on Tahtali Mountain. Also there is the Olympos Aerial Tram, the second longest cable car in the world. Additionally, there are the eternal flames of Mount Chimaera, or as it is now called Yanartas. For sunbathing and swimming, there is sandy Adrasan Beach which is 2.5 kilometers long, and there is Olympos Beach, also called Cirali, which is home to Caretta Caretta sea turtles.

In the Kumluca area, there are many things to do. Travelers can explore the Mavikent Natural Forest and swim at Mavikent Beach with the Caretta Caretta sea turtles. Also in the vicinity is Cift Gozlu Cave. The ruins of the ancient Lycian city of Rhodiapolis are about 5 kilometers from the city center, where many Lycian Rock Tombs are preserved. In addition, Kumluca is where the D400 Highway, here called Akdeniz Road, runs parallel to the coast all the way to Demre, filling car trips with stunning vistas. It is interesting to visit Cape Gelidonya where there is the Gelidonya Lighthouse located at an altitude of more than 200 meters above sea level. Nearby is Korsan Bay, previously known as Pirate Bay, with the ruins of the ancient city of Melanippe. Also near the cape are 5 uninhabited islands, the most notable of which is Suluada, popular for boat tours. With its turquoise waters and small white pebbles, it resembles the Maldives and has 2 beaches ideal for diving and surfing.

Best Time to Visit Kumluca (Olympos)

Kumluca is a quaint town located along the Turkish Riviera and is a district of Antalya. Typical of the Mediterranean, visitors can expect long summers and mild winters which create a perfect environment for hiking and rural walks along the Lycian Way, coastal shores, and historic sites. Kumluca also has a wonderful range of cultural activities and festivals that are spread throughout the year including the Olympos Youth Festival and the Traditional Farming and Greenhouse Festival. 

The most popular time to visit Kumluca is during the summer months, when the climate is hot and the crystal clear waters provide a haven from the heat. Due to its geographic location, Kumluca’s weather is typical of the Mediterranean, with a long warm season that starts in April and ends in late October, making the area a perfect spot for tourism. The busiest months are those that are the hottest, from June to September. Visitors can expect most crowds during these months when boat cruises and water related activities in particular are most popular. The best months for sightseeing, hiking, and inland activities are during spring and autumn, when the mild heat is complemented by warm breezes, making for a comfortable trip.

Weather in Kumluca (Olympos)

Kumluca welcomes guests to a long warm season that lasts over half a year. With the peak summer season starting in mid June and ending in September, maximum heat levels average at 90°F (32°C) in August. The warm season starts in April and ends in late October, when visitors can see temperature highs of 80°F (26.7°C). The longest days are in June with nearly 16 hours of sunlight on the longest day, in comparison to December which has the least daylight with an average of 9.7 hours of sunlight. Humidity levels are relatively low, with July showing an average of 52% whilst January is the most humid, averaging at 72%. Between June and September, Kumluca sees little to no rain and is very dry, whilst December is the wettest month of the year with an average rainfall accumulation of 6 inches. Winters are mild and last a short period from December to early March. The coldest month is January where temperatures can fluctuate from lows of 46°F (7.7°C) to highs of 59°F (15°C).  

Before Visiting Kumluca (Olympos)

Kumluca is mostly hot and sunny throughout the year and most activities revolve around its turquoise waters, sightseeing, hiking, and visiting the many historic ruins found in and around the district. Suncream will be an essential item to pack for those traveling between April and November, and should be used during inland activities as well as those by the coast and sea. For those planning to spend time by the sea, swimwear, a towel, and light clothing will be required. A hat, sunglasses, and sea shoes are also recommended although not essential. For visitors that are planning on exploring further inland and on foot, comfortable footwear will be necessary, especially for rural hikes and visiting ancient ruins. Along with this, lightweight and heat protective clothing will also come in handy and is recommended.

Festivals & Special Days in Kumluca (Olympos)

There are many festivals and cultural events that visitors can experience when in Kumluca. From traditional events to music fairs and sports festivals, there is something for everyone. There is the annual Kumluca Camel Wrestling Festival in January and an Oil Wrestling Festival that takes place in May. Another local event that is held by the community members is the Traditional Farming and Greenhouse Festival which showcases local agricultural traditions and heritage. The International Olympos Culture and Literature Festival, which is the most famous festival in the area, focuses on the ancient city and the area's archeological heritage. It runs for 4 days in September and includes activities such as poetry, music, and various art workshops. The Olympos Youth Festival in August is a music and culture festival that runs for 4 days. Visitors can find activities such as yoga and meditation groups, beach parties, and seminars on the city of Olympos. Entrance is permitted with a ticket, which includes tent facilities, wifi, electricity and showers.

Nightlife in Kumluca (Olympos)

Much of the nightlife in Kumluca can be found in Cirali, within walking distance of the ancient city of Olympos, along a long, narrow road made up of restaurants, hotels, and social joints. Many of these are laid back, relaxed bars that attract a range of visitors, both local and tourists of all ages and backgrounds. Although there are no major nightclubs, these venues host live gigs, DJs, and parties where visitors are sure to be entertained.  

-    Orange Bar

Located just minutes away from the ancient city and Olympos Beach, Orange Bar is a laid back, well-established venue. Visited by both locals and tourists alike, it is perhaps the most well known nightlife venue in the area and hosts some of Turkey’s most famous musicians and acts. Casual in style, the venue has wooden benches for groups to sit at and beer barrels for guests to rest their drinks on, as well as a wide stage that can easily fit a full live band. Most nights are action packed, with eventful themes such as 90’s music, summer disco, and electronic sounds night. The well- stocked bar serves a standard range of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, and guests are recommended to order a chilled cocktail prepared by the experienced bar staff. 

-    Hangar Bar

Hangar Bar is one of the well-loved spots in Cirali, just a 10-minute stroll away from the ancient ruins of Olympos. It is part of the Kadir’s Tree Houses complex, attracting guests with its impressive, lodge-like building, built entirely with logs and home to a relaxed and warm atmosphere. The single storey building is propped up like a treehouse with seating around its perimeter like a balcony,  and the center is kept clear, making sure there is enough space for a dance floor. Separate from the main bar building, visitors can also choose to sit in private huts below.  Keeping in line with the wooden theme, the bar is decorated with vintage wheels, painted wooden panels, and a square bar that sits central to the interior. It holds workshops and events during the day such as dancing classes, and the evenings are left for great music, DJ sets, and dancing. The bar is fully stocked and specializes in classic and house cocktails. 

-    Bull Bar

A slightly small-scale bar situated within Kadir’s Tree Houses complex, Bull Bar is an outdoor open air space. Much like its neighbors, the decor and the building itself are made entirely from wood and it has the same, relaxed and friendly atmosphere. With bespoke seating areas, stone paved floors, and fire pits providing heat and light during more chilly evenings, this space is full of charm. Visitors can expect DJ sets and music comprising a mix of global club classics, house, electro, and Turkish favorites. The bar is fully stocked with a great selection of beers and a menu full of classic cocktails as well as house favorites. 

-    Grouse Olympos

Amongst many of Cirali’s restaurants, hotels and bars, Grouse Olympos is a well loved spot locally. Attracting guests of all ages, it has a wonderful outdoor garden with grass and a big screen set behind a large stage, as well as a warm, laid back interior which serves as a restaurant called Grouse Chicken. The garden can be enjoyed during the daytime and visitors can relax on the beanbags set along the grass with a cold beverage, as well as in the evenings watching live performances on the stage. The bar is lit with neon lights whilst wall and floor lamps are studded along the walkways. Hosting live performances, DJ sets, and themed parties, visitors can expect lively crowds enjoying the atmosphere. Food from the restaurant inside can also be served in the garden, and the menu consists of favorites such as fried chicken, steaks, burgers, and snacks. Grouse Olympos specializes in beers and many different ranges can be found from local and international options, and the bar has the standard range of other alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks.

The town of Kumluca is located in the Antalya province of Turkey on the Turkish Riviera. It is situated 90 kilometers west of Antalya on the Teke Peninsula. -    Simge Kitchen

Simge Kitchen is located in Cirali Olympos. It has a cool and stylish atmosphere with a creative interior design. The indoor dining area holds a beautiful central fireplace and lots of indoor plants, giving it a comfortable and natural ambiance. A variety of dishes are available focusing on local and European cuisines. Menu items include grilled lamb ribs, fresh seasonal salads, fish soups, and Turkish manti, which is a restaurant favorite. This restaurant is well known for its handmade pizzas cooked in the open wood fire. With its high-energy atmosphere and relaxing, chilled music, it's a great place for socializing with friends.

-    Oleandro

Oleandro is located 1.8 kilometers from the center of Cirali Olympos and 600 meters away from Olympos Beach. The restaurant is set in a beautiful secluded outdoor courtyard surrounded by a garden area and shaded by aromatic orange and lemon trees. The dining area is elegant, with soft overhead lighting and romantic candles on the tables. The décor follows the Mediterranean color scheme of white and blue, which stands out against the greenery. The restaurant has a simple but high-quality Mediterranean menu, including authentic mezes, fish, and meat dishes cooked over hot coals. San Simon Restaurant is a concept eatery located in Kumluca. It is sleek and modern with a relaxed and friendly vibe. It has a stylish indoor dining area and an outdoor patio surrounded by green shrubs. The restaurant combines all natural and high-quality produce to create the elements of the dishes. The menu is very creative, with homemade beetroot and spinach buns to accompany the thick beef patties, resulting in an amazing, one-of-a-kind burger.
