Local Legends and History

Meganisi Island, an integral part of Greek mythology, boasts its own share of captivating local legends that add a mystical touch to Abelaki Bay. One such legend speaks of a hidden treasure buried deep within the island's lush forests—a secret whispered only among the locals. It is also believed that a mythical cyclops kept sheep in a cave nearby. Visitors like to dive into the charm of these tales and let their imagination take flight as they explore the stunning coastline.

Wind and Water Conditions

For boaters seeking the perfect harmony of wind and water, Abelaki Bay is a dream come true. The deepest part of the bay is about 25 to 40 feet deep with a quick rise to the shore where it is possible to anchor and bring a line ashore. The bay cuts deep into the island, providing plenty of natural protection from most gusts. There are about seven different coves where boats can anchor, though some are buoyed off for swimming in the peak months of July and August.

Visiting the Bay

There are many little coves where boats can stop to enjoy a bit of sand and sun. In two of the southern coves, there are seasonal taverns that offer bathroom facilities and meals as well as other supplies. Some of the coves have sand and shingle beaches where sea shoes may be needed, while others have no shore, and guests will only be able to swim freely near their vessel. The period with the warmest waters occurs from June to October, when the water’s temperature ranges from 72℉ (22℃) to 79℉ (26℃) which is very pleasant for swimming and snorkeling. No matter where one’s boat anchors, the stunning vistas are abundant and the waters are delightful.
